I ain't own a pair of J's til I was like 18. But then again retros didn't start popping until I was about 18 in the early 2000's. Before the early 2000's, nikkas wore the J's that came out that year. Yeah, you had retro 3's and 1's in 94' but that was more of an exception.
When I was a kid, my family was poor and lived in the hood. I didn't care about J's and was good with my Nintendo and Super Nintendo. Not to mention J's were dangerous to wear in the hood and were symbolic of clout and respect and you couldn't wear them if you were a square really.
I wore Chucks and Nike Cortez as a kid living in Cali. When I moved to the East Coast, I started wearing Air Force 1's and Timbs. But that's all you needed in the late 90's to be considered fresh.
I feel like there's a lot of revisionist history with J's. I remember a lot of other sneakers being more popular than J's in the 90's. And J's didn't even sell out in the 90's like today. They sat on the fukking shelf like any other shoe. Where I was at, the Grant Hill Filas that 2pac wore were more popular than the 11's. Copped the white and blue Penny II from Nordstrom Rack in 97'. Thise felt way more futuristic than J's at the time.
I also feel like more Hispanics, hypebeast and wiggas wear Jordan's than anyone else nowadays and it looks kinda corny.
Like, you weren't even alive when Mike played for the Bulls.
I feel like Jordan's make non-blacks feel blacker and cooler.
Like J's automatically give you swag and "street cred" when too many nikkas expose themselves as swagless hypebeasts with no originality. Jordan's are too easy of a solution to put a fit together. The only J's I wear like that today are the Black and Cement 3. Them 11's are a part of too many unflattering Starter pack memes for me to wear like that. I like wearing kicks not a lot of people have and I don't wear a ton of J's anymore because of that.
