Kia Recalls Vehicles With Trunks That Could Trap People Inside

Kia will recall nearly 320,000 vehicles for a broken trunk release that could cause people to be trapped inside, according to a regulatory filing on Thursday—the latest recall issued by the Korean automaker this month following concerns about a defective part that could pose fire risks.

Kia issued another recall earlier this month for defective oil pumps.

KEY FACTS

The Kia recall covers Rio vehicles from the 2016 and 2017 model years, Optima vehicles between the 2016 and 2018 model years and Optima Hybrid and Optima Plug-in Hybrid cars from the 2017 and 2018 model years.

The company noted that the base of the trunk latch could crack, which could prevent the trunk from being opened from the inside, violating federal regulations.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said: “A person inside the trunk compartment may become trapped, increasing the risk of injury.”

According to the filing, a dealer will replace the part if needed, and anyone suspected of having the defective trunk latch base will be contacted by
October 19.

Kia did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Forbes.

BIG NUMBER

319,436. That’s how many vehicles are affected by the recall, according to the filing. It’s unknown how many of each model are affected.

Mounting clips may break

In the recall issued Aug. 31, NHTSA said mounting clips for the vehicle's rearview camera can break, which can cause the image not to appear properly on the display and potentially result in an accident.

The vehicles, NHTSA wrote, do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 111, "Rear Visibility."
