So I actually think people misunderstand what Leon Rose’s priorities in NY are, mostly because they don’t realize Dolan ain’t as comparatively rich compared to other owners as he use to be. Leon’s top priority is not to get a star (which is why he won’t overpay). It is to create a cost effective playoff team (which is why they treat Thibs like Gold)
With that said Rose makes 14 Mil, Fournier 18. Combines they make 32 million and that leaves the Knicks as a team slightly over the salary cap (which the CBA encourages) but below the luxury tax. By letting both Rose and Fournier expire they can pay IQ and Grimes what they deserve, avoid the luxury tax, and not risk losing either player in RFA as they go into their primes. If they trade Rose or Fournier for any player with even a one year longer contract they would be in a position where teams could put them into the luxury tax to keep their own players and then make their guys overpaid.
This is also why I think they trade Obi come draft time. The situation is bad for both sides now with Obi on a rookie contract. Imagine when it is time to pay him and the Knicks say no because they rather keep IQ (who I think they extend this summer) and Grimes (who I also think they extend) on reasonable contracts. Meanwhile if they flip Obi for a rookie contract that is 4 more years of a player on a rookie contract.
