Then Whiteside tried to play it off as if he was staring past him. He definitely was looking into the crowd as he turned and started running. He prob wasn't staring at Melo, but Melo was looking at him to make sure he wasn't.

This is exactly what happened.
You can tell as Melo initially was turning away towards the inbound he almost did a double take to see if Whiteside was staring at him in particular. Otherwise there would be no need for the double and his eyes with the "who you looking at like that?" look.
