The secret is that they hope that shyt will happen. If the girl was killed, she'd say that all she did was call the cops. If the cops killed the girl, it'd be the cops have a stressful job and that it is the mother's job to keep their child safe. The blame would end on the mother's shoulders.
It perverse game of refusing to take ownership of one's actions. By refusing to take ownership, they can watch the worst happen whilst pretending to be a good person which is what matters to them. They don't care about being good, they care about the perception that they are good.
