We have a culture that doesn't value education. Teachers can only do so much.

Great strawman

It is true that teachers can only do so much. It is also true that they don't. I've been working in schools for years. I'm talking about schools in the projects and schools in upper end suburbs. I keep seeing the same thing. Teachers treating kids like crap or otherwise not doing their job --- and there's nothing school administration can do about it because of unions.

I should say though that the school I'm working in now has been extremely impressive (not a single bad/irresponsible teacher in the entire school), but that seems to be the exception rather than the norm.

How is thst a strawman? Name one time the teachers union went on strike for smaller classes and more freedom to lecture on subjects instead of just having kids take multiple chose test given by bureaucrats in state capitals? There are great teachers that give their life to the job but there are more no good teachers than good ones. And most good teachers will tell you that themselves

He wasn't blaming the students, he was blaming the culture. While I don't disagree with your premise, you did strawman Shogun's position. Well, either you misunderstood it, or misrepresented it.

He made a statement defending teachers and I made a statement Objecting to his post. In defending teachers he excluded them as part of the culture he is saying doesn't value education. The students and parents are who he was referring too so my reply didn't misrepresent his opinion at all. I don't understand how what I said is a straw man argument
