Which is why full independence in all avenues as much as possible is the only way out of the mess.
You have to accept first the world is exploitative and there is always someone plotting to take what you got. Fairness and justice are ideas of luxury and ones that the wolves in the world will use and discard whenever convenient. So you have to recognize this an unassailable fact of the world and move accordingly. A surprising amount of people and even countries struggle with this baseline truth.
It's tough because as history has shown, whenever someone like a lumumba comes along, those same wolves will use every weapon in their disposal to stop it and it's hard to fight back against it because now it's down to a difference in global power militarily and structurally. The Congo didn't have its own CIA that can wage equally destructive operations to destablise the United States. So becoming a military power is the other requirement. The only short cut in this realm is getting nuclear weapons. It's what protects countries with lesser militaries from these issues such as the case of North Korea.
Nationalism and nuclear weapons are the two tools these countries need to protect themselves. Easier said than done of course.
