Yep....learned about this a while ago. Remember, Slaves were property to these people and their money makers. There was a lot of concern about what will happen to those poor plantation owners if they lost their major money making property and was used as a an argument against abolishing slavery. Politicians from the south and the north thought this was a sympathetic argument and worth considering.
Their main concern shouldn't have been becoming broke, but burning in hell and not being rightfully murdered by those they abused. Thankfully, these people did often end up destitute, especially after the war
