Part of this has also to do with just an extremely low self-esteem and self worth in general.

I think some of them are weighing this against the prospect of not going to prom and are like... "if I gotta endure getting called a cotton picker to go to prom with chad... well i guess there are worse things to be called.. "

that.. and since it's a predominantly white environment; they're probably the type who didn't "fit in" with the black girl cliques or groups for whatever reason. So in turn, they gravitate toward the white kids, because they more comfortably associate with them. Then it's the parent's fault to for not being more proactive in immersing them in their own culture, exposing them to more diverse environments and not being more discriminating in the types of kids they let their daughters hang around.

No, we American's don't ALL do these types of rituals. Just like I'm sure that every person from London doesn't dine on scones and krimpets, eat fish and chips or wear bowler hats, or say "hallloooo guvnor" or something like that. That's like me saying that it's think it's weird that people in the U.K. use the word "tea" instead of "dinner".. You can't assume that every culture engages in stereotypical behavior. And that's not even the point, the main issue is the blatant racism and the negativity associated with the "promposal" images.
