The way I see it, most white coli members wouldn't ever really have an opportunity to dispel any misconceptions because white people generally never talk about these issues.
Most of them don't really have black friends. They aren't immersed in black culture. They don't discuss or relate to black issues.
Really, how many of your white friends or white co-workers actually discussed Michael Brown? Or discussed the hypocrisy in convictions between white criminals and black criminals?
99.99% of all discussions that you're going to have with them that include black people are going to revolve around athletes or entertainers.
It's very comfortable to share your love or hate for Kobe Bryant or Nas or Denzel Washington.
But they're not waiting on the line at Starbucks together talking about Eric Garner and the cop who got away with killing him.
The opportunity to "check" people on certain things just doesn't come up.
I'm not going to call a white person a racist because they don't get involved in race discussions. I can understand why they might avoid them.
But I can also understand why some black people might consider their lack of participation in such discussions an avoidance of the inevitable guilt trip over history and how that history has a lingering influence.
I don't know about that. I've had white friends in the past, and I have one now. One of which I've talked about this stuff with. Opportunities to check them do arrive. Even if it's on some slick shyt that one of them tries to say. I was at a TexMex with one of my white friends and his girl around when the Mike Brown thing happened, and his girl some something to the tune of "Things like this wouldn't happen if ______"and he checked her.
You're mistaken ( no disrespect ) if you think the opportunity doesn't arrive AT ALL. It certainly does. Because a hot topic is a hot topic, negative or positive. You expect me to believe that these generation defining events aren't brought up in casual conversation? They are. I know they are because I've seen it.
These situations are AMERICAN events. They are talked about. The question is are they being enlightened to the black experience from white allies who know, or have "heard" about the other side.
