for me id say ps1 and ps2

ps1 came around when drum and bass/jungle music was at its peak mainstream wise so their were a few games that had drum n bass soundtracks, alot of demo games had them

ps2 was the most played console for me alot of the OST were godly

Good game music did drop on the PS1, but also the composers weren't restricted to the consoles sound chip which gave the previous generations distinctive sounds.

In addition to the common mentions of Sonic and SOR, there were lots of other games for the regular Sega that had a good sound track. Gaiares had a hot soundtrack.



Toe Jam and Earl had a good soundtrack.




There are other notables like Cool Spot and Comix Zone. However when Sega CD is factored in, it's not even a fair comparison anymore. Lords of Thunder had the GOAT soundtrack. To the point where there hasn't been a game made since that has a better Metal Soundtrack.






The OST from Robo Aleste was good too.
