Lex no longer produces and while his sound was very influential especially anything he did with Waka Flocka. Mike Will is a better producer and is way more versatile. Anyone knows this if they ever listened to Ransom

yeah i agree in spirit and even voted for Mike Will on this thread but I think Lex was actually cooking everything up himself, Mike Will (admittedly) has a team of people working under him. for whatever that's worth. to me, not much, but that may factor in how some people rate them individually.

Really though look at production and the whole state of VA has had the best run over the course of time. Teddy Riley -> Timberland -> Neptunes -> Lex. And that's just the bigger guys. Guys like bink, nottz are from VA too. the state of VA has had the most lowkey impact on rap music out of any area

What exactly is the VA sound?

I think its just more of a coincidence than anything, Teddy started new jack swing which is a New York sound, he also put the neptunes on. Neptunes were involved in alot of early badboy production.

Mike Will. After he used the low-pass filter in Way Too Gone everyone started doing that shyt. Lex's run was pretty epic though. Maybe throw Southside in there, because he was right beside Lex doing the same shyt and he evolved and is still around today.

This.

Lex stepped up a bit in 2013 versatility wise

I don't think there is a distinguishable VA sound, just saying that producers from VA have low key dominated the industry for almost like 20 years now. Like how you couldn't go nowhere from 01-04 without hearing a neptunes produced track, couldn't go nowhere in 2010-2011 without hearing Lex, and Tim always was charting that entire time. If anything those producers were influenced by other regions/sounds and took that influence and did their own thing with it and just all happen to be from VA. so you're right it is a big coincidence, but its crazy if you think about it, that a random small ass area like coastal virginia (no shots/disrespect to anyone from there) has pumped out that much production talent
