Great Topic

80s: Rakim, BDK & Kool G Rap took lyricism and depth to a whole new level

90s: Nas Illmatic to me is hip hop's bible, Pac made deep introespective n social shyt mainstream, Big hit new heights in flow n lyricsm, then u got Jay-z, Outkast, Mobb Deep, DMX, Eminem, etc..

Conclusion: 80s cemented the foundations and the 90s built on from these foundations and expanded from them

I was born in 88, so my choice is 90s

80s imo

Kane, KRS, Rakim and G Rap will body anybody from the 90s today

They are the true ancient gods of the game

Theres more talent from the 90s but the best of the best are 80s rappers imo

Debuted in the 80s: Rakim, Kane, G Rap, Krs

These 4 u dont touch, its the peak a climax

Then u can go Nas Ghostface Black Thought etc who debuted in the 90s and so on

90s > 00s > 80s > 20s > 10s

80s had the ultimate freshness and the substance baked in but they hadn't quite freed themselves flow-wise.

90s had the flows switching up every verse, the substance still there for a large part, the new slang every fukkin week, the accents, the regional flavours taking turns shining. Ten years of the finest culture ever created by humankind.

00s had that polysylabic, quadruple entendre, peak of the art-form type shyt but was starting to lack the freshness and substance as the artform started to eat itself alive.
