Look up Pensados Place on youtube. Grammy award winning mixing Engineer Dave Pensado has industry friends (famous producers and engineers) come on each week to talk about their tips tricks etc.

He also does this thing ITL (into the lair) where he step by steps a particular process he uses. I'm still n0 good but compared to like 8-9 years ago, :gladbron:

On my first set of beats my mixing was :flabbynsick:

I am slowly learning....honestly i need better speakers/headphones, that will help tremendously. Right now My ear test is how it sounds in the car. if it's wack, I will go back and play with it more. trial an error but very inefficient.

Rule # 1: Invest in a some decent quality studio monitors. If you can't afford a pair, then start off with one. You can use headphones when panning to see how shyt sounds.

With rap beats, it's really about mixing the individual sounds as you go along, more than a final mix.

Don't be afraid to try things. For instance, try things like congo's layered with kicks, or hi-hats layered with snares to make em pop. Reverse a clap or put distortion on a synth, just try shyt.

Play with compressor's and filters. If you're no that technical and don't want to read up on theory, just start experimenting.

I do a lot of research and a lot of trial and error. I watch a lot of videos on YouTube (like pensado's place for example. I see u Kush). I read a lot on forums like gearslutz and future producers and anywhere else I see relevant and helpful info. I also downloaded a few mixing and mastering e-books. I take this shyt very serious, which is why my tracks are always late for the tourney, I gotta get that mix right...it's the most important part of making music, besides creativity.

actually this very efficient.

even guys with big studio monitors still like to play their stuff on a little clock radio and in the whip. to find out how it will sound in different environments. some studios even have the big party speakers, so they can check how it will bang in the club.

some people use filters to simulate this. so they can check the sound as well.

when i first got at it. i was so broke i didnt have the doe for monitors. and this was before all this low budget get yourself an in home studio for under a grand. monitors were beyond expensive. i still dont have legit monitors since i know i'm not about to sound proof my room properly. whats the point?. in addition i have very good headphones and the computer speakers i do have are not your normal computer speakers. they get the job done. my mixes come out 10 times better then half the people i know with legit studio monitors. how is that possible? like you said. i've been doing it so long, i know how it sounds in my headphones, my speakers, in the whip, etc. so i know how it will translate to everything else.

if you're not sound proofing your room properly. getting expensive monitors wont help you as much as you think.
