It's not gossip about the relationship at all. It's posing a question about where gossip starts and how it gets so much life that people believe they heard it in the news (i.e. my girl).

This is in the same vein as one asking about the rumor that Tommy Hilfiger was racist and that he went on TV saying that he didn't want black people wearing his clothes.

Dude went on Oprah after that rumor had existed for YEARS to debunk it but it took forever for Tommy to have a resurgence in the community.
