When you watch a movie, are you looking at it from a "critical" standpoint

I'm asking because I went down a rabbit hole of movie analysis. Like everyone else on here, I'm a movie fan and like to think I'm catching the deeper levels of the film

shyt, how do people come up with the theory and analysis?

I tend to watch things multiple times, look up reviews, and rewatch again. If I start noticing threads, I’ll usually start doing more research (On the director, the author, etc).

After you do it enough, you start understanding basic scene composition and the visual shorthand that is ubiquitous across cinema. You then start seeing that stuff everywhere and then you’ll start seeing when other directors use that shorthand in different ways.

I watch for enjoyment then usually afterwards reflect on it. I don’t dig too deep during it. That’s why I used to love IMDb forums. Watch a flick then run on there to discuss.

I watch a flick and if I see a reason to dive deeper into it, which I love doing I find things that may be relevant to life or can be used as a teaching tool of some sort.

I think the better or more interesting the film is, the more I want to know about it. So then I end up reading articles and reviews to see what other people thought.

Some films take you by surprise because they're actually deeper than you first thought.
