When did WWE start relying too much on nostalgia?

Most of the new guys suck anyways :yeshrug:

"MY NAME IS CLAYTON BARBER FROM SALT LAKE CITY UTAH, MY DAD WAS A MECHANIC AND MY DREAM WAS ALWAYS TO BE A PRO WRESTLER, MY GIMMICK IS I WRESTLE GOOD AND DO COOL FLIPS" like who gives a fukk about these guys when this is essentially all the new guys backstory and gimmicks :hhh:

I'll watch New Japan or old ROH(which had way more flavor than a lot of these guys) when I wanna see good matches for the sake of it, in WWE/ most American wrestling I want the backstory and pageantry

After buying WCW it seemed like they leaned hard on a lot of history. Lonely Road of Faith video, Freddie Blassie, they brought out the “for over 50 years the revolutionary force in sports entertainment” a bunch of times around Survivor Series. I tuned out after X8 so dunno if that was a blip

This shyts been plaguing wrestling since the 90's, when WCW got big w/ a main event full of 80's wrestlers and disgruntled younger ones in the midcard

Nostalgia's always been a tool they use, but Rock/Cena was the start of Vince leaning on it for the biggest slots at Wrestlemania because of how huge it was.

That branched out into the yearly Taker slot, HHH slot, and the concept of "3 main events".

This, though I do agree with OP about them starting this in 2006. Believe Flair/Piper were tag champs at one point during that era and Bret Hart won a title in 2010.
