When did players having rings become the reason we watched the NBA?

My man, no offense, but you're 17. Which means you were an infant even during the 2nd Jordan run. You probably werent even born during the Rockets run.

You dont remember anything NBA related before even the like '02 or so.

I'm not saying you can't talk NBA at all b/c ur young, I'm just saying chill with all this "back in the day" stuff. I can barely even use that term now.

nikka how df are you gonna tell someone what they remember :what:

You're prolly just one of the clown ass fair weather NBA fans i described in the OP

Idc what anybody say but I agree to what the op was saying. Im only 19 as well but it seemed like the NBA back when I was in elem and high school was alot more fun to watch and to watch. The players we used talk about the most were AI, Tmac, Pierce, and VC. It was all about crossing nikkas up, dunking on nikkas and dropping buckets in nikkas faces. When an argument about X vs Y player was brought rings hardly ever entered the discussion.

I remember players got ranked by how good they actually were.

Now nikkas is like "well he just won a ring, so he jumped about 30 spots on my alltime ranking list"

:what:

It started IMO when Jordan wasn't winning rings and Magic, Bird, and Zeke was. It was " oh, he's great but.......no rings." Then it trickled down to anybody who was compared to Jordan, as you can see in the Kobe vs. Jordan debates or Jordan vs. Lebron debates. It's dumb if you ask me and a great player is a great playet. TS is on point, despite his young age. Give him a break, his back in the days is different from ours, but never the less it's STILL back in the days to him.

Meh...it'd be pretty impossible for that to be the only reason people watched the sport, considering there's a 82 game 7 month long regular season and all that, that we all tune into to be entertaned..ain't much changed in that regard...rings are only really brought up or discussed in the context of career accomplish and where players rank and all that...great players are expected to win championships...and on a team level, as a fan, the ultimate point of it all is to see your team win the title and be crowned best in the league...pretty basic stuff...it's the reason why there's a season at all, and not just some long series of random exhibitions like the Globetrotters or something

Im thoroughly convinced that the people here dont watch the NBA for entertainment or the love of the game. They watch it to see how they are going to frame their "This player > that player" argument.

If you take notice you will see there is rarely discussion on how teams play together and the dynamics of the offense. Its always about individual players and their stats.

You are exagerrating that.

If that were the case, his 63 point outburst wouldn't have been celebrated, nullified by "well....he has no rings."

That "he has no rings" thing regarding MJ was not that popular. I was the biggest MJ hater on earth. I would have had company in those days yet I didn't.

Bacc in the day nikkas watched the NBA to be entertained, watch AI cross a nikka, some VC dunks etc...

When you with your boys yall talk about Kobe dropped 40, a last second shot by wade etc...

Now all you hear when you go out "man i hope durant gets a ring" or "kobe, has 4 more rings than lebron"

Like nikka who tf cares :what:

I swear this is the most annoying "fad" in NBA history, what makes it even worst is the nikkas who dont even watch the NBA who come up with corny ass ring jokes

You both bring up good points, but I'd say there wasn't as much emphasis on rings when Jordan was coming up as oppose to after Jordan left. Jordan did catch flack for not winning but not like LeBron did for example.

its this "twitter/facebook nba fans" phenomenon with folk who dont love the sport but watch it for the sake of discussion.

my dumb ass ex sent me a pic of
when-i-need-some-peace-and-quite-i-set-my-phone-to-lebron-mode-no-ring.jpg

in my head im thinking, this bytch has no grasp on the measurement of what a ring means...

long story short its a good marketing scheme
