When and why did black kids get into anime?

Shout out to @Mephistopheles for inspiring this thread.

When and why do "some" black kids get into anime? I know for me it was the level of escapism and creativity that helped Foster my own desire to tell stories. Shows like DBZ and Fist of the North Star seemed to suggest that despite overwhelming odds focus and self improvement could win the day. Reminded me of black folks.

Like everyone else, they most likely first became exposed to it growing up watching pokemon, dragon ball z, megaman, naruto etc etc.

The ones that delve deeper start watching series online and go from there.
