This is a nation that took to mythologizing and deifying Ronald Reagan despite nearly all major issues of the past 30 years being direct results of his actions while president.
Deregulation of pretty much everything led to multiple housing/financial bubbles, multiple recessions, and Bush/Trump trying to use the same economic ideas are going to do them again.
Blowback from involvement in Afghanistan led to 9/11 and therefore Iraq/Afghanistan wars, plus the other assorted places in the Middle East we're blowing up on a regular basis.
Helped destroy Democracy throughout Latin America (and other parts of the world) in such a way that would make Russia blush.
Dramatically escalated the War On Drugs, leading to the racial disparity in prisons to this day.
In trying to destroy social, medical, and housing services, led to a homeless problem so bad he had to get a law passed to attempt to plug the wound, which didn't work well, and surely coincidentally, happened to impact minorities in low-income neighborhoods the most.
Starting his administration off with treason by intervening illegal and against US interests during the Iran hostage situation by negotiating with radicals to keep Americans hostage until he was elected, which then led to that same radical group overthrowing the democratically elected president to and starting their true cultural revolution to the theocracy and issues we've been dealing with ever since. Then, after using Iran to fukk over Carter and get elected, he immediately gave support to Iraq in their war, which he had to remove all sanctions against to sell weapons to, and still supported Iraq during chemical attacks against Iran and the Kurds. Saddam even blew up a US ship in 1987 and Reagan overlooked it. The US also shot down an Iranian passenger jet during that same period, illegally of course, and didn't apologize for it until 1996. Iraq, heavily in debut in part due to the US helping to prolong a nearly decade long war just to fukk Iran, ends up invading Kuwait over debt issues, starting the Gulf War, which ties to the Second Gulf War carried out by GWB's administration full of Reagan people. Unsurprisingly, weapons the US gave to Iraq during the Iran war were used in Kuwait, and weapons given to Iraqis in the 2nd Gulf War were/are used by ISIS.
If you can have both the left and the right treat THAT guy like a saint who saved America, you can't be too surprised that GWB's image, even among left wing journalists that made their careers off of talking about how terrible he was, has been rehabbed and looked at with rose colored glasses. Especially in the wake of an even bigger moron and national embarrassment like Donald Trump.
