Isn't death what gives value to life? What would be the point of living forever, you'd eventually get bored out of your mind and dying would be what's most valuable.

Not a Christian bashing thread cause there are a lot of other religions that also promise eternal life. Why do we as humans place such a high value on living forever? Is this short term thinking or is there more to it?

Fear of darkness of any type (pervasive throughout society, very important factor in racism toward Blacks), fear of a lack of perception, and various forms of religious eschatology all color this. Promises of something beyond mitigates the fear of death related to auto-affection and fetishization of the body.

Me, I'm resolutely fearful of death for the reason relating to perception, but I don't find that death has anything to do with the way that I ascribe meaning to life. What I get out of it is the ability to learn and experience everything that is and will be (even though this is grossly impossible, even with eternal life). I'd want to live forever just to see if I could learn new skills and concepts, and refine them until the end of time (along with actually knowing and experiencing the end of the universe).

But that's just me. If I couldn't perceive and learn, I'd probably just want someone to kill me immediately. THAT'S when life loses its meaning for me.

Eventually given enough time, you would learn everything there is to know and there would be nothing left to discover.

There are some people so focused on the afterlife they spend all of this life planning for something that might not happen in the way they think.

I think if someone promises you eternal life it's not a gift and more of a curse.

You think? I'm of the opinion that there are new concepts and methods of critique developing to the extent that I'd never be able to actually gain traction on its development. I see this as more of a treadmill than a race; in learning all of this and expanding my knowledge base, I'd also be just running in place, as there would always be new interpretations and developments of old and current ideas.

This absurdity is extremely fascinating to me. I'd have eternal life, yes, but I'm not learning any faster. I'm still human.

Living Forever Is Awesome - Television Tropes & Idioms

I used to think living forever would be boring too until I saw a flick called "The Man from Earth". Its about an immortal main character, John, who is over ten thousand years old. He explains that the way he experience life is no different than normal Humans. John describes it as only remembering the ups and downs. Not matter what our age, average people can only remember the "ups and downs". There's only so much we can retain, your capacity to retain information wouldnt increase with immortality.

i don't think its about remembering an eternity of "ups and downs" more so than actually living and experiencing it as it's happening, knowing there is no end to it and the thought of having to continue that process indefinitely... it's almost torture for mind. of course this is all hypothetical assuming we would all experience an eternal afterlife in human terms.

You can't understand living forever if you don't even understadn the purpose of life. Why fool yourself by asking questions that you are not qualified to even understand the premise of. Sit the fukk down before I do something to you that your mother will regret.
