Yup. People forget how viruses have devastated human populations in the past. We are the mercy of evolution and scientific/medical progress.
Less than 100 years ago, 50 million people died from a flu outbreak that infected 500 million. The flu is a minor virus compared to others.
The movie Contagion lays it out very realistically.
Good clerification but i wasnt being scientifically accurate or anything by saying viral pandemic...you got the spirit of what i meant. The devastating pandemic was a BACTERIAL infection (the black plague) not a viral infection.
gonorrhea is now resistant to ALL antibiotics (except one injected AB), and that is one species on a growing list of multidrug resistant antibiotics.
Not only are the resistant to Antibiotics they are also resistant to Antibacterial soap, Hand sanitizer gel and even bleach. We are silently losing the war on infectious diseases.
I think the most likely doomsday scenario would be a freak mutation of a bacteria brought on by Antibacterial soap or Hand sanitizer.

BBC News - Obama warns Syria chemical weapons use may spark US action
US President Barack Obama has said the use of chemical weapons by Syria would be a "red line" that would change his thinking on intervention in the crisis.
He said he had "at this point not ordered military engagement".
But he added: "There would be enormous consequences if we start seeing movement on the chemical weapons front or the use of chemical weapons."
Syrian Rebels Claim to Take Over Chemical Weapons - Middle East - News - Israel National News
The Supreme Military Council of the Syrian rebels released on a statement on Tuesday which said that the rebel forces took control of an army missile base in Damascus, in which ten ready-to-launch missiles were found. Some of the missiles, according to the statement, were converted to carry non-conventional warheads.
rockets ready for launching, with enormous destructive capability, and they were very surprised to find missiles that were converted to carry non-conventional warheads and which can be equipped with chemical or biological warheads,” said the statement which was translated by Arab affairs expert Dalit Halevi.
The Supreme Military Council of the rebels went on to claim that it had confirmed the report by examining photographic documentation of the scene.
