Oakland being a state instead of a city? Trend setting? You can say that about a couple cities

Oakland has had its own rich history and unique identity, I’ve never heard the need for anybody to compare it to Harlem
Never did, but if we're talking about the closest thing to Harlem I'll say oakland and Frisco and Frisco was always referred to as the Harlem of the west but you have to throw oakland in there.

Trend setters in recent times have been from oakland, sideshows, music, fashion, slang etc

I never heard somebody refer to SF as Harlem of the west, that’s hilarious, SF is known as the home of hippies and liberal values, now the Fillmore District in SF has been called Harlem of the west for sure
