Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on DeMarcus Ware: ‘You can’t have it all’

By Anwar S. Richardson8 hours agoShutdown Corner

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has not shown defensive end DeMarcus Ware the door but he sure seems to be pointing in that direction.

Jones said on ESPN’s "SportsCenter" (via The Dallas Morning News). “You can’t have it all.”

Jones proceeded to tell a story about getting off his plane and entering a Ford Bronco at the airport. After a reporter asked why Jones did not own a more expensive vehicle, he explained.

“Well, in order to have a plane, you have to drive a five-year-old Bronco. You can’t have it all,” Jones said (via The Dallas Morning News). “We’ve got those kinds of decisions to make, which is a part of what makes it so exciting in the NFL.”

Ware, 31, missed three games last season and had six sacks, the lowest output in his nine-year career. He also had surgery earlier in February to repair nerve damage in his right elbow.

Dallas has not released Ware, but it appears to be an option if the seven-time Pro Bowler does not restructure his contract.

15 Everyday Foods that Supercharge Your Metabolism

By Redbook | Healthy Living – 8 hours ago
Bonus: They may already be in your fridge. Double-bonus: We've got the info, short and sweet. By Annie Daly, REDBOOK.

Hemp seeds
You don't have to be a Grateful Dead fan to get on board with these seeds. They're a great source of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, both of which improve blood flow to your muscles, revving up your metabolism. Plus, they reduce inflammation.

Matcha

Yup, that's just a fancy word for green tea. It not only packs a bit of caffeine, which speeds up your heart rate and thus your metabolism, but it also has norepinephrine-stimulating EGCG, a nutrient that helps boost your metabolic rate.

Related: 9 Secret Calorie Bombs Lurking in Your Diet

Almond butter
The nutty spread is a low-glycemic food, meaning it helps keep your blood sugar level stable. That's crucial because regular blood sugar spikes and drops slow down your metabolism.

Salmon

The pink fish contains tons of fatty acids, which actually help your body burn fat. Other fatty fishes, like tuna and black cod, work too.

Amaranth

This whole grain contains a perfect trifecta of nutrients: protein, carbohydrates, and fat. That balance of ingredients helps keep your system stable, so your metabolism runs more smoothly.

Mandarin oranges
Studies have proven that the smell of citrus calms you down and reduces levels of cortisol, the body's stress hormone. And when you're not bugging out, you're less likely to reach for sugary comfort foods, which throw your metabolism out of whack. Other citrus fruits, like grapefruit, also do the job.

Pistachios
These nuts take pretty much forever to eat (the cracking! the shells!), which, while annoying, is great for your metabolism. Having small meals and snacks, like pistachios, throughout the day allows your body to process them more efficiently.

Kale

Even more reason to grab a green juice after your workout: The leafy green contains lots of protein and fiber, both of which keep you full without spiking your blood sugar, which could mess with your metabolism. Other green veggies--think spinach and Brussels sprouts--are great too

Coconut water
This super-hydrator keeps you from getting dehydrated, which disrupts your metabolism.

Papaya
This island fruit contains papain, an enzyme that increases digestion and thus speeds up your metabolism.

Cottage cheese

The go-to snack is packed with protein, which takes longer to digest than carbs or fiber. And when your body has to work harder to break down a food, it burns more calories, supercharging your metabolism.

Hot peppers
Spicy foods contain capsaicin, an ingredient that may raise your body temperature when you eat, thus boosting your metabolism.

Related: 9 Habits That Slow Down Your Metabolism

Quinoa

This little supergrain is a big, big yes because it's packed with protein and fiber, both of which boost your metabolism.

Veggie soup
Between the broth and the veggies themselves, this comfort meal is basically all water. H2O keeps your entire system running, which is key for an efficient metabolism.

Blueberries
This fruit has a super-high water content, so much like veggie soup, it helps keep your system running smoothly to ensure that your metabolism is working at its best. Plus, thanks to their high fiber content, blueberries keep you regular.

Xbox One's Price Drops After Three Months

Xbox One's Price Drops After Three Months
Related Stories
Video game consoles usually have to wait years before manufacturers decide to drop the initial retail price; the Xbox One had to wait three months. Starting on Feb. 28, British Xbox Ones will cost £399; later on, select systems will come with a copy of anticipated sci-fi shooter "Titanfall."

The price of an Xbox One in the British Isles is currently £429, or approximately $713. The new price will place it at about $664 — a reduction of 49 dollars. At present, Microsoft has not indicated that a similar price drop will reach North America. If it did, however, a similar drop would bring the console to $449 here.

MORE: PS4 vs. Xbox One: Which Console Wins?

"Titfanfall," which launches on March 11, is a competitive first-person shooter where players can duke it out either on the ground or in gigantic, pilotable robots. Microsoft has hyped the title up as a system-seller: the first "must-have" title for the Xbox One (even though it will also be available for PCs the same day and Xbox 360s later in March).

A limited number of Xbox Ones will come with a digital copy of "Titanfall" at no extra charge, which may help move even more systems among prospective buyers who were waiting until the game's release to invest in a console. These "Titanfall" bundles will be available in North America, too, although both territories will only receive limited quantities.

Regarding why (or whether) the Xbox One needs a price drop only three months in, Microsoft has not said much. Recent reports from Microsoft and the NPD suggest that the Xbox One could be trailing the PlayStation 4 (which retails for $399) by as many as 2 million units.

The Xbox One's price drop may not hit North American shores for some time, but the "Titanfall" bundle still represents a way for prospective buyers to save a little money. Cheaper still, though, is buying the title for Xbox 360 or PC.

12 Years A Slave is coming to a school near you

Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave will be packaged into a high school curriculum on slavery, along with the book it was based on and a study guide created by the National School Board Association. Television personality Montel Williams spearheaded the effort to bring the film to classrooms, which combines the efforts of the NSBA, New Regency, Penguin Books, and the producers of the film.

Director Steve McQueen is quoted in the press release: “Since first reading 12 Years a Slave, it has been my dream that this book be taught in schools.”

Williams did the same thing with the 1989 film Glory, as part of an curriculum about the Civil War. He’s also quoted:

12 Years a Slave is one of the most impactful films in recent memory, and I am honored to have been able to bring together Fox Searchlight and National School Boards Association to maximize its educational potential. When Hollywood is at its best, the power of the movies can be harnessed into a powerful educational tool. This film uniquely highlights a shameful period in American history, and in doing so will evoke in students a desire to not repeat the evils of the past while inspiring them to dream big of a better and brighter future, and I’m proud to be a part of that.

We’re not sure about the word “impactful,” but everything else sounds good to us.

Calif. couple strike $10 million gold-coin bonanza

By JOHN ROGERS55 minutes ago

    .
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Northern California couple out walking their dog on their property stumbled across a modern-day bonanza: $10 million in rare, mint-condition gold coins buried in the shadow of an old tree.

Nearly all of the 1,427 coins, dating from 1847 to 1894, are in uncirculated, mint condition, said David Hall, co-founder of Professional Coin Grading Service of Santa Ana, which recently authenticated them. Although the face value of the gold pieces only adds up to about $27,000, some of them are so rare that coin experts say they could fetch nearly $1 million apiece.

"I don't like to say once-in-a-lifetime for anything, but you don't get an opportunity to handle this kind of material, a treasure like this, ever," said veteran numismatist Don Kagin, who is representing the finders. "It's like they found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow."

Kagin, whose family has been in the rare-coin business for 81 years, would say little about the couple other than that they are husband and wife, are middle-aged and have lived for several years on the rural property in California's Gold Country, where the coins were found. They have no idea who put them there, he said.

The pair are choosing to remain anonymous, Kagin said, in part to avoid a renewed gold rush to their property by modern-day prospectors armed with metal detectors.

They also don't want to be treated any differently, said David McCarthy, chief numismatist for Kagin Inc. of Tiburon.

"Their concern was this would change the way everyone else would look at them, and they're pretty happy with the lifestyle they have today," he said.

They plan to put most of the coins up for sale through Amazon while holding onto a few keepsakes. They'll use the money to pay off bills and quietly donate to local charities, Kagin said.

Before they sell them, they are loaning some to the American Numismatic Association for its National Money Show, which opens Thursday in Atlanta.

What makes their find particularly valuable, McCarthy said, is that almost all of the coins are in near-perfect condition. That means that whoever put them into the ground likely socked them away as soon as they were put into circulation.

Because paper money was illegal in California until the 1870s, he added, it's extremely rare to find any coins from before that of such high quality.

"It wasn't really until the 1880s that you start seeing coins struck in California that were kept in real high grades of preservation," he said.

The coins, in $5, $10 and $20 denominations, were stored more or less in chronological order in six cans, McCarthy said, with the 1840s and 1850s pieces going into one can until it was filed, then new coins going into the next one and the next one after that. The dates and the method indicated that whoever put them there was using the ground as their personal bank and that they weren't swooped up all at once in a robbery.

Although most of the coins were minted in San Francisco, one $5 gold piece came from as far away as Georgia.

Kagin and McCarthy would say little about the couple's property or its ownership history, other than it's located in Gold Country, a sprawling, picturesque and still lightly populated section of north-central California that extends east of Sacramento to the Nevada line, running through the hills and valleys of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

The discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill, about 50 miles northeast of Sacramento, set off the California Gold Rush of 1848.

The coins had been buried by a path the couple had walked for years. On the day they found them last spring, the woman had bent over to examine an old rusty can that erosion had caused to pop slightly out of the ground.

"Don't be above bending over to check on a rusty can," Kagin said she told him.

They were located on a section of the property the couple nicknamed Saddle Ridge, and Kagin is calling the find the Saddle Ridge Hoard. He believes it could be the largest such discovery in U.S. history.

One of the largest previous finds of gold coins was $1 million worth uncovered by construction workers in Jackson, Tenn., in 1985. More than 400,000 silver dollars were found in the home of a Reno, Nev., man who died in 1974 and were later sold intact for $7.3 million.

Gold coins and ingots said to be worth as much as $130 million were recovered in the 1980s from the wreck of the SS Central America. But historians knew roughly where that gold was because the ship went down off the coast of North Carolina during a hurricane in 1857.

Bradley Roby, Phillip Gaines sprint into spotlight on NFL combine’s final day
2014 SCOUTING COMBINE, NFL DRAFT, NFL DRAFT 2014

BY CHRIS BURKE
2014-nfl-combine-risers-sliders-day-4.jpg

Ohio State’s Bradley Roby believes he can be a shutdown cornerback in the NFL. (Michael Conroy/AP)

How can NFL defensive coordinators possibly counter the influx of athletic talent and changes to the game that have made offenses so potent? Here’s one way: find a cornerback like Justin Gilbert to draft.

The 6-foot Oklahoma State product dominated DB drills in Indianapolis, racing through the 40 in 4.37 seconds and following that up by showing impressive fluidity elsewhere on the field. The debate will rage between now and May as to whether Gilbert, Darqueze Dennard or another talent like Kyle Fuller is the top cornerback in the draft.

Gilbert definitely threw down the gauntlet Tuesday. Which other players starred or struggled on the combine’s final day?

Risers
Phillip Gaines, CB, Rice: Size and speed. That’s the desired combo at … well, every position for the most part, but especially right now at cornerback as teams attempt to find the next Richard Sherman. Gaines’ game is not even in that ballpark yet, but he probably made himself some money in Indianapolis.

The 6-0 Gaines broke a Rice school record with 38 pass break-ups during the season and he flashed top-end speed Tuesday, running a 4.38 40 time — just one one-hundredth of a second off Justin Gilbert’s DB-best time. He also hit over 10 feet in the broad jump and posted a 36 1/2-inch vertical.

“For a guy that’s going to be a mid- to late-[round], developmental corner,” the NFL Network’s Mike Mayock said, “I’m not sure you’re going to get any better value than Phillip Gaines.”

MORE: 2014 NFL Mock Draft | 2014 NFL Draft Big Board | More 2014 NFL draft coverage

Deone Bucannon, S, Washington State: There is a perceived drop-off at safety after Alabama’s Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Louisville’s Calvin Pryor. Don’t mistake that statement with a lack of talent at the position.

Bucannon could be the best of the rest. He stands 6-1 and between 210 and 220 pounds (he was closer to the latter at the Senior Bowl, then dropped down under 215 for the combine). There have been questions about his speed, even as a safety who has shown the ability to come down into the box and make plays. He put some of those fears to rest on Tuesday thanks to a 4.53 40 that’s plenty fast for a safety.

Keith McGill, CB, Utah: One look at this guy should tell you all you need to know about why he’s an intriguing prospect. He stands 6-3 with long, muscular arms — watching him catch and run Tuesday certainly gave off the impression of an NFL cornerback. His unofficial 40 times of 4.44 and 4.5 at that height might even bump him up to the point of being overdrafted.

Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State: The former Buckeye is a sensational athlete. We knew that much headed into Indianapolis and an unofficial 4.4 40 won’t do anything to change the scouting report.

“Are you convinced you can be a shutdown corner in the NFL?” Roby was asked this week.

“Yes, definitely,” he responded. “I think that’s something I bring to the table to any team and I plan to show that to whatever team drafts me.”

He was that guy during the 2012 season at Ohio State. He wasn’t — at least not consistently — in 2013. The terrific speed and his willingness to play physically will keep him in the Round 1 mix.

Sliders
Ed Reynolds, S, Stanford: Reynolds kind of got double-whammied by Mayock on the NFL Network’s broadcast.

“He would have been better off going back to Stanford for another year,” Mayock said after Reynolds’ first 40 time landed in the 4.6s. Later, after a similar performance, Mayock added, “I was hoping he’d run faster.”

As a safety Reynolds does not need to be in the 4.4 range like some of the cornerbacks, but he is coming off a disappointing 2013 season at Stanford. His game is more read-and-react than it is dominating with athleticism, so his speed should not bury him. Still, he could’ve used a stronger showing really across the board on Tuesday.

Loucheiz Purifoy/Marcus Roberson, CBs, Florida: Both guys finished at 4.61 officially in the 40. The result was particularly surprising in relation to Purifoy, who seems to be faster than that time on film. Even former Florida Gator Joe Haden, now a member of the Cleveland Browns and a guest analyst on the NFL Network Tuesday, seemed surprised by the lack of acceleration.

“I thought he’d be faster,” said Haden of Purifoy.

Seconds later, Deion Sanders joked the Roberson had run himself into a grouping with the safeties, who generally are slower.

Purifoy may have quicker feet than he showed in the 40 drill, especially when it comes to turning his hips. Roberson never pretended to have superhuman speed, though chipping into the mid-4.5s at Florida’s Pro Day would help him out a bunch.

One Gator who did help his cause Tuesday: DB Jaylen Watkins, who was two-tenths faster than Purifoy and Roberson.

NFL free agency doesn’t officially open until March 11, but the rumor mill is already in full swing. Find all the latest buzz from around the league below.

Tuesday, Feb. 25
• Terrell Owens said “there’s no doubt I can still play.” Owens, 40, last played for the Seahawks in the 2012 preseason.

• Colin Kaepernick’s extension could put him among the top 10 QBs in terms of yearly average. “t sounds like $15-16 million is the floor for an average salary,” said the San Jose Mercury News’ Tim Kawakami.

• Chiefs LT Branden Albert is expected to draw interested from the Dolphins, as well as the Cardinals and Buccaneers, says Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. The Chiefs have also not ruled out re-signing Albert.

• Could the Cowboys release DeMarcus Ware? Jerry Jones left the door open Monday, saying that the Cowboys would consider cutting Ware if he’s unwilling to restructure his deal.

• The Raiders would like to re-sign Charles Woodson, says coach Dennis Allen (via ESPN’s Jason Wilde).

Analyzing Raymond Felton's gun charges, future in NBA

2

Raymond Felton is facing felony gun charges in New York, a state with extremely strict weapons laws.
Nathaniel S. Butler/NBAE/Getty Images
New York Knicks point guard Raymond Felton has been charged with three offenses under New York law for unlawful possession of a firearm. The most serious is second-degree criminal possession, a felony charge that carries a minimum sentence of three and a half years behind bars. Felton's charges stem from his estranged wife, Ariane Raymondo-Felton, reportedly handing over a Belgian pistol (FNH 5.7x28 mm) to New York police and claiming it belonged to Felton. Raymondo-Felton's decision to turn over the gun appears connected to a heated argument Felton may have had with his girlfriend, whose name has not been released by law enforcement.

The charges
Unfortunately for Felton, New York is probably the worst state to be charged with illegal possession of guns. Prosecutors do not need to establish how Felton obtained the gun or why he possessed the gun, only that he possessed the gun. Felton has thus been charged with a strict liability offense: if he possessed the gun, he's guilty and a judge would sentence him to at least three and a half years behind bars. Felton could seek a plea deal in hopes of a lesser sentence. Former NFL star Plaxico Burress, who faced similar charges in New York, ultimately pleaded guilty to lesser charges, but it was far from a legal win for Burress. Burress spent nearly two years behind bars. Plus, as discussed below, pleading guilty would carry legal significance for the NBA as it considers suspending Felton, while the Knicks could potentially try to void the remainder of Felton's deal.

SI Now: Felton's arrest the latest Knicks debacle
Source: SI
On Tuesday's SI Now, NBA Producer Matt Dollinger discusses the absolute wreck of a season the New York Knicks are having and says Raymond Felton's off-the-field incident is the ironic cherry on top.
Felton's legal defenses
Even if Felton lawfully registered this gun in another state, Felton cannot escape a conviction under New York law. Gun registration is by state, and New York law requires guns entering the state to be registered in New York. Similarly, Felton will not be cleared by arguing that he was simply unaware that possessing this gun was in violation of New York law. Failure to know the law is almost always a losing argument in a criminal case.

A legal defense that could work for Felton is that he did not possess this gun. In order to gain a conviction, prosecutors must establish, beyond a reasonable doubt, that Felton actually possessed the Belgian pistol. This point reveals a crucial difference in evidence between the incidents involving Burress and Felton. While Burress had no logical way of arguing he didn't possess a gun used to shoot himself, Felton's connections to the Belgian pistol are less obvious. As of now, the only reported link between Felton and this pistol is that his estranged wife handed the pistol over to law enforcement and claimed it belonged to Felton. If that remains the only link, watch for Felton to portray his estranged wife as unreliable and, given their pending divorced, biased. He may raise similar themes about his alleged girlfriend if she testifies against him.

Prosecutors can establish Felton's possession in other ways. For instance, if Felton registered the gun in another state, if his fingerprints are on the gun, or if photographs and videos show him with the gun, prosecutors can show a connection between Felton and the gun. Felton's lawyers, however, can use various devices to attempt to explain away those pieces of evidence. For instance, they may insist any photographs and videos show him with another gun. They may also raise suspicions about how any fingerprints were found on the Belgian gun. Still, his lawyers will have their work cut out for them.

Felton's future in the NBA -- and Adam Silver's first big test
An immediate challenge for Felton is whether he can travel with the Knicks and leave the state of New York while facing the charges. As part of the bail process, Felton will have to convince a judge that he is not a flight risk or a danger to the public, and that he needs to travel with the Knicks in order to fulfill his employment contract. A judge would likely permit him to travel under strict conditions. One game Felton will have trouble playing in is the April 11 matchup against the Toronto Raptors at Air Canada Centre. The Knicks' legal team will have to convince Canadian immigration officials to permit an employee facing felony charges to enter Canadian soil.

Of even greater concern to Felton is whether he will face an NBA suspension. Recall that then-NBA commissioner David Stern suspended Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas indefinitely in January 2010 after reports surfaced that Arenas brought guns into the Wizards locker room. Arenas would be charged by D.C. police and then pleaded guilty to a felony weapons charge. In March 2010, Stern specified that Arena's suspension would be for the remainder of the 2009-10 season, costing Arenas 50 games.

New commissioner Adam Silver will face his first major disciplinary decision with Felton. Like Stern, Silver is an attorney and he will likely scrutinize the charges and available evidence before making a decision. Silver will also rely on the counsel of Rick Buchanan, the league's general counsel and executive vice president. Silver and Buchanan undoubtedly know that the league's image is tarnished with fans, media and lawmakers when players are connected to guns. On the other hand, they do not want to punish a player who may ultimately be cleared of any wrongdoing. This is a crucial point for Felton as he considers his legal options: if he pleads guilty to any crime, the NBA would be clearly justified in suspending him.

If the NBA suspends Felton for more than 12 games, Felton and the NBA Players' Association can seek an independent review of the suspension. This is a key distinction between the NBA and NFL's systems of justice. While NBA players have a right to appeal suspensions to a neutral arbitrator, NFL players do not.

Knicks' capacity to void Felton's contract
Felton's greatest worry may be whether the Knicks will use these charges as grounds to void his contract. Felton's contract calls for him to earn $3.6 million this season, $3.7 million next season and a player option for $4.0 million in 2015-16. Felton is averaging a career-low 10.3 points and his play has drawn much criticism this season, with the gun charges only further hurting his standing with Knicks officials. It stands to reason the Knicks may be interested in severing ties with their point guard all together.

The Knicks could try to terminate Felton's contract under Clause 16 of the NBA's Uniform Player Contract. In theory, this clause allows NBA teams to void a contract if a player, "fails, refuses, or neglects to conform his personal conduct to standards of good citizenship, good moral character (defined here to mean not engaging in acts of moral turpitude, whether or not such acts would constitute a crime), and good sportsmanship..." The Knicks would have to first place Felton on waivers. Assuming he clears waivers -- a safe bet -- the Knicks would then notify Felton that his contract has been voided. To be sure, the Knicks' legal argument for terminating Felton's contract would be strengthened if Felton is convicted or if he pleads guilty.

LeBron James hopes to return on Thursday against the Knicks, will wear a protective mask
NBA

Miami Heat star LeBron James said he should be able to return to competition in time for the team’s Thursday game against the New York Knicks, after sitting out Miami’s 93-79 victory against the Chicago Bulls on Sunday with a broken nose.

James was able to take place in non-contact drills on Tuesday and told Steve Wine of the Associated Press that his nose is still sore but has improved. He plans to wear a mask in practice on Wednesday to grow accustomed to it before his return.

The reigning MVP said that the protective gear is uncomfortable, but will not affect his style of play.

McCANN: Analyzing Raymond Felton’s weapons charges, future in the NBA

“It’s a difficult challenge,” James said. “It’s like somebody constantly has a hand in your face. It’s like an added defender you definitely don’t want. I won’t change my game because of the mask, I’ll probably be a little tentative when I first get out there, but I think I’ll get used to it.”

Sunday’s game was only the second James has missed this season, both of which ended in Miami victories.

Report: Celtics looking into Rajon Rondo’s unexcused absence
NBA

BY TIM POLZER
rajon-rondo.jpg

Rajon Rondo reportedly did not receive permission to miss the Celtics’ trip to Sacramento. (Alex Trautwig/Getty Images)

The Celtics are looking into Rajon Rondo’s decision to skip the team’s trip to Sacramento last week, Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald reports.

Rondo remained in Los Angeles — reportedly for a birthday celebration — while the Celtics traveled to Sacramento. Rondo, who continues to work his way back from a torn right ACL, was not scheduled to play against the Kings on the second night of a back-to-back, and possibly assumed he was free to miss the trip without obtaining the Celtics’ permission. Rondo previously remained in Boston while the team traveled to Milwaukee for their Feb. 10 game that also was the end of a back-to-back.

Bulpett cites a source who believes Rondo remained in Los Angeles to celebrate his birthday with family members.

“His wife and kids were with him in LA, and there were some other people who came in,” a source said. “I think he felt obligated to them, too, and what they had planned for his birthday.”

Rondo didn’t want to comment on the matter before Monday night’s 110-98 loss to the Jazz. More from the Boston Herald:

“We already talked about it,” Rondo said. “There’s nothing to talk about.”

That doesn’t appear to be the case. President of basketball operations Danny Ainge said yesterday he is still looking into the situation.

“I plan on talking to Rondo when he gets back into town,” he told the Herald. “I’ll find out more about what went into it, and then we’ll handle it internally. We handle all of those kind of issues internally.”

McCANN: Raymond Felton’s felony gun charges could cost him NBA career

Rondo could be fined, or simply told to follow protocol and avoid future misunderstandings, according to the report.

For me was a few days ago, I made myself squirt as I was getting it in with my dude, and I squirted on his dikk while I was riding it. It felt so good and I kept going and kept squirting and for some reason I felt like I just walked outta heaven.

Las Vegas police avoid fender benders
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Officers say their too busy to respond to small accidents anymore
  • Unless the car crash resulted in an injury don't expect police to show up
  • The small stuff eats 250 hours of their time every week
  • Come March 3, they move on to bigger cases
(CNN) -- If you get into a fender bender in Las Vegas, don't bother calling 911. A car dings yours in traffic, same deal. In fact, unless the car crash resulted in an injury don't expect police to show up.

That's because Las Vegas Police just don't have the time anymore. Every week police in Sin City estimate they spend 250 hours on this kind of work. Time they'd rather spend it tackling bigger cases.

So come March 3, police will leave it up to drivers in these minor accidents to do the right thing. That means exchanging insurance data and filing a report themselves.

Not everyone thinks the new move makes sense.

"People are going to be over exaggerating, understating the accident, and the procedure of the accident isn't going to be reported correctly because of a lack of police involvement," Dena Gaskin told CNN affiliate KLAS.

And while drivers many cities gripe about traffic hazards, Vegas motorists face certifiably mean streets.

All State Insurance Company every year ranks 200 cities based on their claims data. In 2013, Las Vegas ranked 130th. Meaning that on average, drivers there get into an accident once every 8.7 years.

If you don't like those odds, keep in mind, the city has improved on its 2012 performance. It has moved up six whole spots in the rankings.

Police aren't sugar coating their new policy. They acknowledge in a press release that the move "may be an inconvenience to our citizens." But they also say motorists won't be totally on their own. Police will respond to minor accidents if one driver refuses to turn over his or her info.

Also, officials were quick to point out: Las Vegas isn't the first.

San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles and other cities have similar policies, traffic chief Mark Tavarez told KLAS.

Los Angelinos in particular will likely have some sympathy for Las Vegas's decision.

Their city weighs in at 181 on Allstate's list.

Cutting the Army will make it stronger
By Michael Desch

Hagel: Cuts reflect 'repositioning'
Michael Desch is a professor and chair of the political science department at the University of Notre Dame. He specializes in international security and American foreign and defense policies.

(CNN) -- Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has fired a shot across the bow of business-as-usual at the Pentagon by announcing significant cuts in the U.S. Army.

Trimming the active component of the Army from 580,000 to 450,000 would hardly take us back to the interwar Army of 280,000 that gave birth to great wartime leaders like Dwight Eisenhower, George C. Marshall, George A. Patton or Douglass MacArthur, but it still represents a significant reduction in manpower.

It undoubtedly will start World War III on the Hill and among other elements of what Ike referred to as our "military-industrial complex," but Hagel should hold the line as the time is ripe for an audacious move on this front. He should stand by these cuts for three reasons:

Michael Densch
First, if we are serious about trimming federal spending, the Department of Defense and the military can't be exempt from the budget fight. According to The National Priorities Project, only 30% of the federal budget is made up of discretionary spending, and of that fraction, defense makes up nearly 60% of what we might possibly trim.

While modern weapons systems have astronomical price tags, the dirty secret is that one of the biggest lines in the Pentagon's budget is personnel costs -- primarily salaries and health care -- that constitute 26% of the Defense Department's 2014 request of $527 billion. Given that the Army is the most manpower intensive of our services, it is inevitable that it will have to bear the brunt of these cuts.

Second, after two long and inconclusive wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is unlikely that the American public would rally round the flag for another major exercise in nation-building and counter-insurgency.

Get real, Hagel tells nation in proposing military cuts

It is unlikely that the American public would rally round the flag for another major exercise in nation-building and counter-insurgency.
Michael Desch
The sort of military missions the public is likely to support -- special operations-led counter-terrorism strikes, remote-controlled drone campaigns to mop up al Qaeda and indirect military assistance to beleaguered allies -- do not require the hundreds of thousands of boots on the ground that swelled the ranks of the Army over the past decade. Indeed, for the foreseeable future, the services most likely to constitute the tip of the spear for U.S. military missions will be the Navy and the Air Force, whose personnel requirements for missions to keep the peace between China and its neighbors or wage drone and cyber wars are unlikely to be very large.

Finally, the dark cloud of large-scale defense reductions may have a silver lining: Bold budget cuts constitute opportunities to subject old and obsolete ways of doing business to the sort of "creative destruction" that economist Joseph Schumpeter thought was the genius of capitalism.

Although the analogy is by no means perfect, military historians have chronicled instances in which periods of deep budget and manpower cuts have produced great periods of strategic innovation. The German military after World War I and the U.S. military after Vietnam are two examples of organizational adversity leading to strategic quantum leaps.

Report: Army shrinking to pre-WWII levels
Cuts of this depth will undoubtedly force the United States to further trim its military presence overseas. Iraqi President Nouri al-Maliki already showed us the door with his refusal to sign a status of forces agreement covering the small number of residual forces we had hoped to leave in his country. Afghan President Hamid Karzai is turning out to be equally inhospitable.

But there is significant U.S. Army presence in Europe and Korea. If we had to choose, we could more safely draw down further on the continent than we could on the Korean Peninsula. Aside from a possible land war in Korea, most of our strategic pivot to Asia is in response to possible Chinese naval challenges which do not require much ground power.

Such deep cuts will be painful -- both politically for the administration and directly for our men and women in uniform -- and so should not be implemented cavalierly. On the other hand, to paraphrase Napoleon, if we want to make significant cuts, we should "do it energetically and with severity. This is the only way to make it shorter, and consequently less inhuman." Our military and our country will be better off in the long run.
