What's should be the optimum level of defense spending?

We should spend just enough to protect our own borders and have enough in reserve to support a military that can mobilize in times of global crisis. Not a penny more, if we cut our military budget by 75% and spent it on infrastructure, education, and healthcare our country would not be in remotely the financial pit, it's in now, in fact we'd likely have a Clintonesque surplus.

not half our budget. I don't get why we need 200 military bases around the world.

Well a huge chunk of our defense spending goes to contracts to businesses that have their hands up the asses of the politicians who make the spending decisions so until the cronyism and political payoffs can be weeded out of the system i wouldn't hold my breath on defense spending being cut in any major way.
