After reading up on this more, it's not that bleak.
Post June 1st cut designation saves them some money. Saw tweets saying they were close in negotiations but AA wanted to see what he can get in the open market. So he can still come back and re-sign for cheaper...

It’s a cold game but expect it to be normal, they need space for Purdy

If we cut Arik Armstead we gotta get DJ Jones and draft a D-Lineman. Maybe sign a cheap veteran.

I think we lose Javon Kinlaw in free agency.

I have no interest in having us trade for Zach Wilson but with that said backup QBs are making real money now I don't think Wilson will cost a lot.

A healthy Armstead is a great asset because he helps cover the Wide 9 run defense problems. And he beasts in the playoffs.

But we've known he was the most likely casualty of our cap situation with all the big re signings we've doing the last three seasons.

It is kinda funny how the DeFo situation ended up with Buckner, Armstead AND (most likely) Kinlaw out of the team 4 seasons later.

That would be weird. He's leaving because he wants to win more money than what we offered on a new restructure. And I have a hard time seeing any playoff caliber team with some cap space not signing him. He's one of those players you never have to worry about and steps up in big games.
