What are the best exercises to get thicker calves?

To a certain extent there is some truth to what @Malta stated about calves development being agonizingly difficult to come by & the gift of genetics playing some part.

FWIW I use the specialized Calves routine described in the link below. Highly recommend you read ithe whole article & throw this program in as part of your accessory work post main lifts. I've been doing it for 2 or so months now & can honestly say its beefed up the old calves a little bit.....that coupled with daily soccer regimen has got them looking kinda decent'ish lately

The Truth
From what I understand, there are many ways to build explosiveness

I would say first start out with basic plyometrics. Box jumps, bench jumps, frog jumps... Just jumping in general. Learn the basic technique to jumping (yes, there is technique) and more importantly learn to land.

Then move on to light weight with the jumps. Maybe a weighted vest or resistance bans. Keep it light and working your way up to high reps.

For weights, I would suggest low rep/moderately heavy weight but focusing on lowering the weight and exploding through. I also did a lot of isometrics. I've lost a lot of hop abilities but like I said, you actually have to jump to build that up.

Cleans are good too. Light cleans at a fast pace and if you go heavy, focus on form and explosiveness instead of speed

And the best resistance is gravity. You can get some pretty beefy/impressive leg gainzzzz by plyometrics
