older cats like songs here and there. But most I know listen to r&b,smooth jazz etc

When you think of culture and all that it encompasses Hip hop is only a subsection of AA culture
It's AA culture because if hip hop came out around their time they would be listening to it too.

But those older cats aren't the dominant presence they once were. Popular R&B is basically hip hop these days and jazz is a niche these days. Hip hop culture took over. You'd be hard pressed to find any black person under 50 that doesn't have some type of hip hop influence in everything they do. I look at my parents and they came up on classic R&B/Soul and they get all dressed up to go see the Stylistics when they come in town. You think we putting on suits and fancy dresses to see the Wu Tang reunion tour in 2030?

im saying though breh. Music is only one portion of culture. You have way more elements that make up a culture and im not just talking about the last 20 years or so

Im from new York city, the Bronx at that. My parents are sixties babies that grew up on hiphop, father used to be a DJ and all that. I know what your trying to say but 40 million people don't all fall under that umbrella.

Back on the topic. I would like to know more about Geechie and Gullah culture. And I think ya boy @IllmaticDelta might know something about that:feedme:

So they dont listen to hip hop.

Just because they dont partake in a part of black american culture that doesnt make it less so. They just chose not to subscribe to it.

Might just be a misunderstanding

But when a breh ask "What is black American culture". And a dude simply responds "hip hop" and nothing else. Im assuming he/she thinks that's all black culture is

Contemporary culture and Culture are not synonymous. Neither are norms, roles and culture. Many of you confuse them.

Exactly dudes are forgetting the "History" element. Probably the most important piece to the puzzle in culture
Cats are saying hip hop this and that. When the blues had to exist first, to snowball effect into hip hop. Both are equally relevant In this topic

Keeping my overhead low, and my understand high
I'm guessing that outsiders interest in Hip Hop makes them not want hip hop to be black american culture because they want in since its popular.

They want to call it "Urban" culture.

You know what...

That's kinda right. Black Americans are pretty much going to be assimilated into American Culture. Black American Culture will just be a part of America... I give it 1 more generation.

The biggest factor is language, I think. Foreigners aren't considered American til they speaking that good English.

Blacks already speak English so that entire culture is just being absorbed.

That can't happen as long as there are racist whites lol.

Not to mention that racist whites are getting more aggressive these days,

I think the most on point thing mentioned so far is AAVE. That is the one unifying element that permeates through the majority of Afro-American populations in America. It is spoken in any neighborhood' in America with a majority black population, or even among African-Americans that are not in AA-dominant area. It's the way at times AAs speak differently in the workplace from how they usually would amongst other black people that they have a fraternal relationship with. That can easily be described as part of AA culture. No reason why it should be distinct from any other creole language spoken elsewhere in the world.

Aside from that you would have to add music (jazz, soul, hip hop, R&B) food (soul food) and to a lesser extent urban wear. FUBU was a staple of African-American urban wear at one point :scusthov:.

The Church was at one point a cornerstone of the black community, but this has changed a bit in the last few decades. A lot of the civil rights leaders were reverends and pastors. The Church played a fundamental role in the civil rights movement as well....people seem to forget this.

I can't help but feel like this is a silly ass discussion.

The Samurai is a symbol of Japanese culture. So is the Geisha. Most Japanese people throughout the country's history have never done one or the other but it doesn't make those things any less Japanese.

So to say that Hip-Hop, Jazz, Soul Food or African-American vernacular english is not apart of an understood, established culture is laughable.

African-American culture is simply the uniquely black interpretation of American culture. Some would say Its an American sub-culture instead of an independent all-encompassing culture of its own but you can say that about literally everything. American cuIture is a 'sub-culture' of western civilization. I just think people are so used to shytting on black people, they don't realize it.
