Is rap as a culture dead? No matter how you look at it, whoever wanted to watch the BET Awards would have watched the awards, rather they have cable or not. They would find a way if they really wanted to. So you have to ask is there still an interest in the culture or is it truly just a gossipy age?

They refuse to adjust.

This was as good a year as any to invite fringe and underground rappers to fill that stage or do cyphers. BET is out of touch, they need to hire some young people and fix it.
How though? What can younger people do to fix it?

I think the issue is they have no reason to watch.

If not for Kendrick, this entire year of rap is all-time low. Who in rap worth watching an awards show for?

Really tho the bet hip hop awards has never been that special. The BET Awards is the main thing to watch, and it's been wack now for several years
The only real stars aren’t showing up. Who’s watching that show for the “hot at the moment” artists? People will lie and say all these rappers are winning but obviously people don’t care about them that much.

Internet slowly killed award show telecast and post COVID was the nail in the coffin

The regular guy who's dealing with his own life doesn't want to take two hours out of his life to celebrities praise each other

They would be tapped into different strains of current rap culture and be able to better curate show.

No, you don't want xaviersobased and Roc Marciano in the same cypher, but you can curate cyphers based on these different styles throughout the show. Partnering with twitch would also help with viewership because that's where younger people watch things now. Revamp the categories. Have a melodic rap, plugg etc,; category. The fact the likes of Cardi B were nominated for LYRICIST OF THE YEAR when Roc, Ka, Che etc,. released projects this year is ridiculous.

Ain’t nobody paying to watch the BET Awards.
Even worse, ain’t nobody searching for a bootleg stream of the awards.
If they want viewers, that shyt gotta be free and on YouTube.
shyt we got Verzuz for free.

This board is as out of touch, even moreso than BET. Why would Jay Z, Rihanna, or 50 Cent be at a BET hIp Hop Awards show in 2024? Even Beyonce. Even if we were talking about the main BET Awards show. Jay hasn't dropped new music in years. Rihanna hadn't had an album in nearly a decade and she was never a staple at the BET Awards. I don't even recall her performing. 50 Cent hasn't a big song in over 15 years. Unless you're giving them lifetime acheivement awards, there's no reason for them to even be invited.

Beyonce just put out a new album and she was a staple at the BET Awards, but again unless its a lifetime acheivement award, why would Beyonce even be invited. She doesn't even make videos any more. BET doesn't show videos any more.

Awards shows used to be hype because it was an opportunity for:

1) Debuting a new single. Even if we had been listening to an album for months. It was hype seeing an artist perform a song that you were hoping to be the next single.

2) A fresh take on a single that had been out for months. Sometimes artists would premier remixes on an awards show or a completely new rendition of a song.

3) First time seeing a new artist perform live.

4) Rare glimpse of your favorite artist. Yeah, we saw the videos, but seeing them perform the songs live was an experience.

^^^ Internet changed all of this.

the culture changed. The internet is available for the rest of the world, yet their shows haven't taken the hit American ones have.

Billboard Latin Awards are gonna be on this weekend, and A listers still show out for that (sometimes an American A or B lister will pop out for that). Some cultures still appreciate the pageantry, the buzz, the red carpet (it's why the Oscars are still hanging on-- the die hards still take that seriously). Americans don't care who wins what for the most part because we assume everything is corrupt. When your favorite artist doesn't win, fans move goalposts and talk about money, streams, who the streets are feelin.

Also, the generation of people who might tune into these shows don't recognize 70% of the artists there. I was at 2 basketball team practices in the last week or so and they'd have "celebrity basketball games." More than half of the celebrities are YouTube influencers, so if that ain't your world, they're gonna show up on TV and viewers are gonna say "who the fukk is this." That's where we are with hip hop. You can be a fan or music or rap and STILL not know who half these artists are (and many of em aren't good enough to convert you into being a fan). When's the last time you saw someone at an award show on stage kill it so crazy that you had to find out what the fuss was about? That doesn't happen anymore, so why sit through new artists' performances or cyphers (which they didn't have this year)?

Well the current stars must not be moving the needle cause them being there did nothing. I mean people keep saying Glorilla is running things but did her being there even help? They had E-40 performing, Soulja Boy, Trina, 2 Chainz, Roscoe Dash… they're older too lol. People keep trying to say if they stream it online people will watch.. Why watch the show when you can just watch the clip of your favorite artist that they’ll cut and put on YouTube? People just don’t support that awards show but then will complain about the Grammys. The BET awards show is on life support and this one visually showed that.

Latino Awards Shows are relatively new and how many Latino A Listers can you really name that are A Listers on general? Of course they are going to show, there aren't many platforms that are celebrating Latino music.

Most of our A-Listers don't drop music like that any more. They don't even do press. It's not shocking that they aren't attending shows. Nobody is going to be hyped for a televised performance from an A Lister unless its the Super Bowl half time.

This shows you how just how low the bar is. E-40 has been in the game 30+ years and is arguably the most successful artist out that list. The rest were never the biggest artists of their respective eras and are 15-25 years removed from their debut albums.

We should ask some young folks about this. All we can get here are oldhead answers.
