as much as i like kendrick...i have trouble with this song too...its like hes tellin a story, but never finishes it or explains..
but that hook and beat though
It's about how he grew up in a household where everyone was drinking heavy. On one of his interviews he said in his household you were either a casual drinker or a alcoholic. There was no in between. In the context of the album, the song is about how people would drown their problems in alcohol. Also in the end of No Make Up he starts saying "And you don't have to drink to have fun".

he wasn't trying to make a club song, he decided to throw out a concept at you idiots on a hot beat so either way he couldn't fail cuz if you didn't get what he was talking about, you'd still feel it anyway... so no it's not a forced club song, he's a GENIUS for that!

okay listening to it it's obviously anti-drinking
- the encouragement to drink comes from an external voice, very hyperbolic ("swimming pool full of liquor")
- kendrick says it's bad to be drawn towards it ("that was my problem")
- the refrain is menacingly over the top (drink... drink ... drink)
- there's an exchange between his conscience and his influences
- his 'influenced' mindstate gets violent
- all through his mind gets more faded
- the extended version has a tragic conclusion (appetite for failure)
