It was established on the show that Goku was a straight up bum ass nikka. They basically lived off the land though (like Goku had been doing since he was a kid). Plus he had rich friends, even before Mr. Satan came along Bulma was bankrolling a lot of his shyt.

As for Yamcha if I remember correctly he was a pro baseball player or some shyt.
