for the iStandard shyt I remember going to 3-4 showcases when I had my boys involved. I mean it was cool got to meet alot of industry dudes but no one was really trying to "work" they all felt like they were there because they were paid and the moment the showcase was over most of them always dipped.
then they started their website charging dudes $100 or so or free if you did the showcase. Now the showcase was like $300 I think from what I remember and you got a free year on the website. During that year we pumped beats through there non stop. Talked with mad dudes that used that site to and with us and anyone we ever spoke to no one really got a call back. I remember we got some work with a dude named Frank Lucas jr( yea THAT frank lucas) and we were gonna do shyt with him but decided to go in another direction

outside of that, I did a lot of work shopping beats for artists. and some got some work others didnt. I had a pretty good working realtionship with some industry dudes that I would deal with regulary who would school me on some shyt when I was younger (dukedagod for example, if anyone knows who that is).
My homie was signed to a record label as an in house producer, and we were able to go in and see how alot of stuff really went down. Big producers coming through and "borrowing" your ideas and samples. Copying your hooks and shyt. He got paid but it was more hush money than anything else lol.

Gotcha. I was just at the Standard showcase in philly. I really enjoyed it. All 3 judges were friendly and not blowing people off. Its def hard for producers, on one end, we have to take every opportunity to capture, even the slightest chance.

there are just as many producers nowadays as there are rappers. So producers have to grind just as hard.
YOu can't just make beats and send them out hoping to get a break( I mean you CAN, but the odds are very slim) cuz everyone is doing that. You have to go out and seperate yourself from the pack

honestly the BEST part about those showcases was networking with the other producers.
Especially in places like NY, Philly, ATL, etc eventually someone is gonna run in to someone or who knows someone...you get it?
if you stay cool with those other dudes and even collab with them or work with them, build with them who knows, they could blow and remember you and or vice versa.
Business is all about building relationships. DOn't just shrug off those other compettiors, actually network WITH them.

My goal is just to make solid music, and get recognition from those I respect. Ultimately I'd like to pay the bills off creating music. Whether for rap, TV, games, movies, IDC.

Ive done a few battles and showcases.

Including iStandard. But they def make a killing on each show, 300$ a pop.

Good networking though. The one I did for BeatAcademy was a lil better though. Got to politic with Jake 1, S1, and Guru. Which was cool.

A few of the cats from the BeatAcademy battle I did are pretty deep in the industry now. I had a baby and it's been tough working 9 to 5, raising my kid, taking care of my house, and still havin time for beats.

I'm trying to stay on my grind and honestly feel like I should be further by this point, but haven't put the work in.

To even get noticed on a small scale takes A LOT of work. And like Marcus said you gotta invest in yourself to get somewhere sometimes. Scared money don't make money lol.

If you're confident in your craft just try to play your beats and link up with as many producers/artists/industry heads as possible. Play your shyt for everyone that will listen. PLay your BEST shyt.

Also @producingfire I got your email man, I been forgot to reply. I'll hit you back later.

I think they chargin 300$ now, yeah.

That's why I don't do em. Haven't been since October in NY at Fontanas though.

Think their current rate is 200 down 100 at the door something like that.

Not sure it's worth it unless your confident you're gonna win or place highly. They do so many show now the importance of winning them has gone down significantly if you ask me.

That's what I'm talking about. It sucks to shell out that money, but as producers we gotta take every opportunity possible. Can't be 40 and say what if.

There is no secret trick to get you where you want to be, only hard work persistence and patience. One thing that was undermining a lot of people I spoke with, was what they believed the music industry to be. This Glamorous lifestyle, everyone knowing who you are, ect. You are able to do what you love and love doing it at all times 24/7. Not necessarily. Some Days, it can be nerve-racking spending all the time making beats that you feel will never see the light of day. Yet you look around, and you see all the people you look up to being successful, and living there dream. One thing people never seem to see, is the work they put in to get there, or there live's outside of music. I can tell you a few things from personal experience, it takes a lot of time.

that struck a chord with me. not personally...cuz i've never idealized the music industry or imagined that 'glamorous' lifestyle for myself, plus i'm not even a real beat-maker/producer type, that's not my focus, i've strayed away from that...but one thing i've noticed in many young, inexperienced artists is that they get caught up in "the lifestyle" waaaaay too early and they get all fukked up and end up going nowhere. i actually see that more in like indie-rock bands other than anything. there's been a bunch of people i've known, even one i actually grew up with, immensely talented musicians, the heart and souls of their groups, people that can't even do anything else, that have shyt it at all away over and over again. they get a little success, hit some clubs, maybe even get on a tour, make enough money to record a new album in a nice studio, think they're the shyt and start going all-out and acting like keith richards...that starts affecting the band, fights starts and all of a sudden, everybody loses. i've seen these people do it multiple times to multiple bands. a couple of them went on and did well without them but still...

it's really fukking frustrating to watch happen.

In light of this generation's "leader" being a puppet, combined with already being non-social, I'ma have to say this shyt ain't for me. I'll be writing for more image-based and marketable nikkas. I'll still make music for myself and people close to me but if no one takes the art serious why should I? Play the game like the rest of them, get my quiet money.
