because that escalation would bust my budget when i was younger

personally ..i think about something interesting from our last conversation
and figure out some additional anecdotes, info, or questions for her to extend the subject
it's genuine.. i picked a good topic (in the sense that i care about the outcome)
it shows that i was listening to her (which helps)
and it is a way to subtly test our compatibility

even if the date bombs, i at least prepared myself to converse on a topic
i can always reuse that skill later in a different context
