To be fair this is a claim in hindsight from a man who now has deep mental and emotional problems, exacerbated by refusing to take his medications. Maybe he's telling the truth and was bullshytting all that time. But I seriously doubt it. Most of us remember that era pretty well. Kanye was getting paid from mainstream and backpack rappers at the same time. The context of his music was always a mixture of both sides, and it's why he was so innovative at the time. The backpacker who was smoking, drinking, and fukking hoes. That duality was real IMO, he wasn't faking it.

Look at his haircut in that video btw. Look at how he's dressed. Consider the rumors about his bad hygiene. He's a complete trainwreck and whatever image he's pushing has no real connection to blackness anymore.

I know a couple people that went to middle/high school with him, and they always just assumed he had mental problems; Specifically tourette's syndrome and bipolar disorder.

Said that he would sit by himself on the bus and just blurt out random vulgar shyt. Would go on rants about how great he was and how the people he was talking to weren't shyt. Just weird shyt like that.

Based on how the last several years have gone, it seems clear that something is really wrong with dude, but the signs have always been there.
