what country can beat the united states in a war today?

No two or 3 countries combined can invade the Continental United States. The Navy, even downsized as is, is too strong and the oceans are too big. Also if we wanted too, we can easily destroy the Chinese Navy in the Pacific and gain superiority on the sea and air.

That said, the Chinese and Russians can defeat the Army if we ever tried to invade their countries. China has too many bodies they can throw at you, and Russia has a combo of bodies and weather. They both have advanced air defenses which would hamper air superiority.

Vietnam beat the United States, and Vietnam was definitely technologically behind the US.

The United States has the Big guns, but it also has to fight a war with its own Media and internal critics.

The United States still hasn't defeated or contained the Islamic Terrorist organizations. It still hasn't stabilized Iraq or Afghanistan.

It may have the Big guns, but it has too many moral restraints to actually be a threat to any of the Big countries like Russia or China.

if you talking a protracted american invasion of another country tho, I think we would have a hard time dealing with the russians or chinese solely because a) they have pretty good air defense systems in place and b) their geography doesnt lend itself to be easily defeated due to landmass size and places like the ural mountain range or northern chinese steppes where they could pull back and regroup, but even then we could take their capitals rather easily

america has a good record against european and latin american countries, but a couple l's against african/muslim and asian countries

The average American is far from trained for war combat. Owning a gun and going to the range doesn't make you trained. True the average civilian has access to a great number of tools of war, but truly lack the skill to use those tools properly.
