What could a modern wrestler do to become as big of a star as Rock/Austin?

If the E was really just about business Punk could have been gone months. All they had to do was bring him back before Mania. He could have wrestled in all the promotions they have decent relationships with, ROH, PWG, NJPW. He could have lost the belt to a non WWE wrestle (who they would sign and debut after Mania) but got it back after a rematch.
Loads of possibilities but short sightedness has long plagued the McMahons and this idiot Cripple H.

Nothing, wrestling just isn't as hot or as mainstream as it was back those days. You'll get superstars who get big but will never be household names like hogan, rock or austin.

It has nothing to do with it being PG, the "wrestling" is better than its ever been. But people just don't care anymore
True... John cena might be the Last Huge Star will ever see

Theres no blueprint its lightning in a bottle.
This, but also, I don't think WWE wants someone as hot as Rock/Austin/Hogan anymore. Yeah, they have their "guy" (Roman), but I don't think they want someone who can essentially become bigger than the company itself or someone that has their own strong opinion about how their character should act. They're far too controlling at this point brand-wise and creatively. They want their top guy to be someone who is just happy to be the #1 guy on a WWE rasslin show and fine with being given direction, and that's it.

A #1 guy with creative freedom will always lead to more money.

I think when HHH takes over guys will be able to say what they want on promos, though.

Crossover appeal :manny: :

Start as a division 1 football player with a marketable REAL name (like Brock Lesnar, like Kurt Angle)

Get off to an insanely hot start WWE, dominate there and then leave (un)cerimonioisly after building credibility with the fans

Start dating an incredibly famous woman

Go to the UFC and shoot scathing hot promos there

Win a title in UFC and kick ass a few times for a few years

Shyt on the UFC in a post match promo

Show up to Raw the next Monday and destroy a champion Roman Reigns for the title

:banderas: if someone executed that, ESPN would be all over him, all of the smaller websites (deadspin bleacher report, barstool) would have a field day with him. Vince and HHH would give him whatever he wanted and the fans would be glued to the TV

Are you intentionally referencing Brock? Sounds a lot like Brock.

I realized that when I wrote it but that's the only legitimate way to get the "crossover" appeal like Austin and Rock

You can't just have their charisma and stay in pro wrestling because pro wrestling isn't as topical anymore.

You have to build legitimacy outside of wrestling in the most comparable way (UFC) and then you have to leave the UFC on top but controversially

Then, you show back up at WWE and pull all of the "mainstream" eyes with you and destroy the one guy that fans hate. Instant superstar.

Outside of the ring you need a marketable real name so you aren't doing interviews saying "well my real name is Colby Lopez but in WWE it's Seth Rollins" and you need to be seen with a smoking hot famous woman so that the tabloids follow you and pull in their viewership.

This argument is annoyingly repeated and still wrong...look at the ratings pre-attitude era during the early 90s/new generation...WWE was waaaay worse off than they are now in every aspect... imagine if the internet forums and this thread was around in 93 and you were like "people don't care anymore...wrestling will never get as big as the rock and wrestling/Hogan day"....wrestling will boom again...but it needs a drastic overhaul and that won't happen from within WWE current environment

Yeah man, Vince doesnt want any entity bigger than the business.

Im sure he views it as a form of theft when a talent he built leaves with what he gave them.
