If Krit had made just one album it would've been album of the yearArmand Hammer - Rome
Billy Woods & Blockhead - Known Unknowns
Oddisee - The Iceberg
Roc Marciano - Rosebudd's Revenge
5th might have to go to Krit...few bumps aside, that was a damn good double album
I may have to I heard it was dopeA lot of y’all mentioning that Mozzy album, I ain’t never listen to him... it’s that good?
Dope list, a few albums on there that I need to check outHere's my list:
10. Cyhi the Prince - No Dope on Sundays
I totally forgot about this guy. I kinda got this album on a whim but I was surprised by how dope it is. The beats are classic GOOD Music sound and Cyhi has a kind of nice no nonsense delivery that just makes for a really good album. The lyrics are deep at times but not preachy and he's a good story teller. It bangs in the whip and sounds good on your headphones. Definitely an enjoyable listen and one of the best albums this year to me.
9. G Perico - All Blue
Now this some classic azz Western Coast Shyt. His style to me is kind of remiscent of DJ Quik. It's crazy for a guy so young because he sounds almost like an old soul. I know a lot West Coasters are probably writing late passes for me but I'm definitely checking for him from here on out.
8. Young Thug - Beautiful Thugger Girls
I have a love/hate relationship with Thugger. I always thought he was more talented than the music he put out up until recently. It's weird because the album vibes like a R&B album and he's clearly playing with other genres of music like country and even though he's not a good singer per se he has a great feel for music. This album surprised me because he eschewed expectations while keeping his fan base happy. It weird to be only 26 and the father of this era of music.
7. Future - HNDRXX
I think this is my favorite album from him since 56 Nights. Again like Young Thug he's kind of crooning his way through the album but it oddly enough had a 90s R&B vibe but like it was kind of chopped and screwed. It's tough to describe but the production is really lush and intricate at times and then sparse and basic at times but it all.flows naturally. He should be a relic by now in a sense but Future keeps on chugging along.
6. Big Krit - 4 Eva is a Mighty Long Time
Dude takes more musical risks than any rapper out. It was ballsy to pit out a double album and even more impressive that both discs deliver. Krit definitely uses the best elements of Outkast, UGK, on top of jazz funk and some other stuff. Definitely one of his best projects which is saying something since his discography is impressive.
5. Kendrick Lamar - Damn
I said in another thread that this is the album for people who don't like Kendrick Lamar. He basically made a pretty straightforward hip hop album eschew the funk odyssey which was TPAB. He gave us some of the best hits this year in Sit Down and DNA but Fear I thought was one of the nest songs to come out this year and worth the price if admission.
4. Tyler the Creator - Flower Boy
It's kind of crazy how no one has really talked about this album. Is it because he Tyler kind of came out as Bisexual (though anyone who listens to his music he kind of alludes to not being 100 straight)? Who knows but he is also coming out as the artist he wanted to be. He basically put out one of the best produced albums of the year. He has elements of jazz, R&B and it sounds different from anything else he has put out so far. It's easily his best album and worth being in your rotation.
3. Jay-Z - 4:44
Is this Jays best album. No. Is it his best produced. No. Yet this was maybe the most talked about album this year and Jays best work since American Gangster. He opens the curtain and shows the man behind the billionaire facade and for that I salute him.
2. Run the Jewels - Run the Jewels 3
This is the magnum opus between Killer Mike and El-P. This is they have been working towards and this is worth it. Killer Mike sounds like 2017 Chuck D and the production is equal parts punk rock and hip-hop. This is one of the best hip-hop trilogies ever once it's all said and done.
1. Odisee - The Iceberg.
One of the most technically gifted lyricists of the past decade. This to me was the best album of the year. Odisee is such a well balanced lyricist that he can cross a wide array of subjects and sound natural through all if it. 'You Grew Up' is one of the most piercing songs about Black/White relationships and is worth a listen if nothing else. But for me this 'as my favorite album this year.
