In the long run yes. A hero or protagonist is only as good as his villain or antagonists. The fighters we remember had storied rivalries and humans love a good story.

im going to mention one for boxing..in this decade thats not mentioned as much as it should be
rios vs alvarado
the first fight put some mileage on both guys - awesome FOTY slugfest that rios won
the second fight was even more violent than the first fight - for like 8-9 rounds was ridiculous give and take - but alvarado makes a key adjustment to box to pull the win...if it wasnt for bradley vs provodnikov this would have been 2013 fight of the year..this fight took both of them out of their primes
the third fight made rios temporarily look like a killer again because alvarado was on his drug shyt..disappointing as fukk
