Star 80 and Runaway Train, two Eric Roberts classics before he made his descent into direct-to-video territory along with his buddy Mickey Rourke.
Star 80 is based on the true story of Dorothy Stratten, a playmate who at the start of her rise to fame was murdered by her paranoid ex-husband/ex-manager Paul Snider. The movie follows Snider (played by Roberts), an egotistical creep, as he discovers Dorothy and tries to leech of her success due to his own lack of talent. It's a bit like Taxi Driver except Snider has no likable trait about him, just a pure a$$hole and Roberts plays him with total conviction to the point he himself claimed that women were flat-out turned off by him for three years because of this role.
Runaway Train is an action thriller done right. Jon Voight and Roberts are prisoners who after a successful escape end up on a runaway train. As they try to regain control of the train, they are being chased down by the sadistic warden of the prison. What sets the movie apart is that the motives of the two prisoners play a big role in how they perceive their situation and future, and this affects their decision-making. Fun fact: the movie also features the debuts of both Danny Trejo and Tommy Lister.
