Jet focused episodes >>>> have grown to truly appreciate him as a character on this watch

@Consumed I know you've spoken glowing Ed' character being your favorite, Im interested by that. Never really ever gave her character any thought, but it is interesting just seeing how she is the polar opposite of the main characters in terms of outlook

I like that Ed balances the adult pessimism of Bebop with childlike enthusiasm and fun. She has plenty of reasons to be sad - abandoned by her father, no mother, periodically homeless, living on a planet in ruin. Still carries a positive attitude and does whatever she can to make the most out of her situations. She makes Bebop a lot more accessible by infusing light hearted comedy into a universe that is mostly dark outside of her. Ein also accomplishes this as a character.

You'll notice that Faye, Jet, Spike have a hard time lowering their guards. Afraid of getting hurt, opening up old wounds. Ed doesn't care about any of that and does what she wants, when she wants to whoever she wants with little to no concern. I find that to be an endearing character trait, and it's obviously intentional that she is written that way juxtaposed to the people that surround her.

The moment we do see Ed down - when she finds her father. She soon makes the decision to move forward and change her life for the better. No longer happy sitting in stagnation on a ship with people who could only look backwards. That is my favorite segment in the entire show, and it underlines one of the core themes of what Bebop is about.

Beyond her personality and quirks, Ed has a skill that is valuable in the world that she lives in, and is apparently one of the best in the universe at doing it. She is not dependent on Spike/Jet/Faye to survive. Nobody carries her. She joins Bebop out of her own free will (by force no less - they try to leave her, Ed hacks the ship to make them turn back) and leaves on her own accord. Is a key part of a several mini adventures that the crew leans on her tech savvy to complete, one of them she does solo with Ein.

there is also a difference in delivery between her Japanese/English versions. The English VA sounds like a lunatic, speaking in the 3rd person all the time. The Japanese VA sounds more like a regular hyperactive little girl (and the VA was in fact a little girl when recording). So I think the latter version captures the intention of her character a bit more than English.

tl;dr Edward is skilled, endearing, funny, has a lot of impact on the tone of Bebop, is important to a core theme of Bebop, and is free spirited in a show full of people who are slaves to their past. One of my top 5 characters ever.
