I think Oda was a bit inconsistent in regards to how much strength Whitebeard had left and how he uses it but that's about it. In the manga it was all out action and Whitebeard used most of his strength trusting in Luffy and paving the way for him. The anime already had slowed down the pacing at that time so there are more breaks in the action which make it seem they had more room to maneuver.True story.
