I'll admit, 70% of MegaloBox is the ambiance. It legit feels like a mix of super old school and golden era adult swim samurai champloo type shyt. If there were commercial breaks you'd be sitting there 2 am waiting to hear a Oh No (not Madlib, Oh No) beat before you went to the bathroom/went to the kitchen/started trying to get seeds out of your weed so you could roll up.
Reminds me of Gangsta aesthetically. The relaxed atmosphere immerses the viewer into the story and every scene is made better by the soundtrack. I also like how the setting of the slums is juxtaposed against this rich corporation of Megalonia, so in rooting for gearless Joe you're rooting for the impoverished to prove they're just as valuable as the rich.
I've mostly been disappointed by the in ring animation. A lot of the fights aren't fluid and the punches appear to lack impact, which is weird since the gear system is supposed to provide power. Having 26 episodes to work with rather than 13 would do the story more favors too.
I'm probably jaded from having watched Ashyta no Joe within the last year as well.
We really have. Feels unfair to compare to Ippo, but you kinda have to since there's so few boxing anime.
