Apparently he aint got no entertainment lawyers or business lawyers to help him with his contract. The lawyer to get you out of jail IS NOT the same lawyer to keep your label from jerking you.
So why is he requesting a lawyer with no ties (ie experience) in the music industry? I don't know the details of his deal but I have enough experience to guess some things. Dream Chases (his imprint label) is on UMG. Maybach Music (Ross' imprint label) is on Warner. By 2014, his albums shifted directly to Atlantic (a subsidiary of Warner). In short, he was signed to two major labels, but three separate staffs were all working on his shyt (and eating). To make matters more confusing, he later added Roc Nation management to Dream Chasers. So that's two major labels, two imprint labels, a subsidiary, and a major management company eating off his projects.
We can assume he got a nice bag for Dream Chasers, but that's effectively a loan you have to pay back. None of the artists he signed panned out btw.. We can also likely assume he was dumb enough to take another bag in the form of an extension, likely from Atlantic. IE "we know you signed a 5 album deal, but if you add on 3 more albums we'll give you x million right now." Mind you, Meek claims he only made 11mil. I'd bet that most of that was from the imprint deal (Dream Chasers) and the extension he probably/likely signed (Atlantic). Plus whatever money he made off album/single sales.
LONG story short his contracts are fukked across multiple major labels, plus being signed directly to a rapper (Ross), plus the Roc Nation side. Seems clear he's in label/paperwork hell, the last two albums didn't recoup, and the label has little interest in incurring more debt by giving him another album budget. A label can let artists go free but why would Atlantic or UMG do that when they can sit back and collect in perpetuity. You don't need some random "business lawyer" to fix this. You need a music lawyer - the type of lawyer he says he doesn't want, because he's stupid. And like I said, the label has no incentive to play ball. Certainly not while he attacks them.
