In other news, Josh Morgan is struggling to recover from his leg injury. Sad, Josh is a good dude. It's a shame Harbaugh had to run it up, that prolly cost us a SB appearance.

Skins looking very stupid.

Josh Morgan struggling to recover from broken leg

Washington Redskins wide receiver Josh Morgan suffered the kind of injury last season with the San Francisco 49ers that seriously damages free agent value. That's why Morgan's pricey two-year contract with Washington was one of the most bizarre of the offseason.
.

It's not like Morgan had great production in San Francisco. He was always known as a solid contributor and good teammate, but he never topped 700 yards in a season and he was coming off a fractured leg and ankle.

Eight months later, Morgan still isn't recovered. He didn't practice fully at Redskins OTAs and is limited in minicamp. He admitted to the Washington Times he's lost five inches off his vertical leap. Morgan hopes to be ready for training camp.

It's not like the Redskins don't have depth at wideout. Pierre Garcon signed for even bigger money to start. Santana Moss remains in town. Second year player Leonard Hankerson is a breakout candidate, although he hasn't practiced fully either all offseason coming off hip surgery.

There's not enough playing time for all these guys. Despite Morgan's price tag, he needs to show he is healthy again before he gets back on the field.

Training Camp Notes:

SANTA CLARA -- Near the end of the 49ers' 2 1/2-hour practice Wednesday, the starters on offense and defense lined up against each other for a last-play-of-the-game scenario.

Quarterback Alex Smith last season hit tight end Delanie Walker and Vernon Davis on game-winning touchdowns in the closing seconds of victories against Detroit and New Orleans.

This time, Smith's strike to Michael Crabtree was on the mark for a 10-yard touchdown between the coverage of cornerback Chris Culliver and safety Donte Whitner.

This round went to the offense.

:win:

The second-team offense was not as successful, as quarterback Colin Kaepernick's attempt to a well-covered Joe Hastings sailed out the back of the end zone.

Here are some notes from Wednesday:

--Linebackers Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman were excused from practice. Willis returned home Tuesday on a personal matter, the team said. Bowman, an expectant father of twins, is with his girlfriend in the Washington area.

--Others who did not practice due to injuries: Receiver Ted Ginn, guard Joe Looney, and linebackers Joe Holland, Darius Fleming and Cam Johnson.

[MAIOCCO: Will full-time role impact Aldon Smith's stats?]

--Safety Dashon Goldson remains unsigned as the 49ers' franchise player. And running back LaMichael James is finishing school at Oregon.

--Cornerback Tramaine Brock had a solid day with a couple of interceptions, including a pick of a Kaepernick pass that sailed over Randy Moss' head at the left sideline. He also had an interception of Josh Johnson in a one-on-one drill.

--Undrafted rookie cornerback Anthony Mosley intercepted a Johnson pass intended for rookie receiver A.J. Jenkins.

--Receiver Mario Manningham had an active day with at least three receptions during the 11-on-11 session.

--Kyle Williams, Kendall Hunter, Chris Culliver and Perrish Cox got work as the deep men on kickoff returns. Brandon Jacobs and Will Tukuafu were among the players who were working as blockers on the return team.

--Undrafted rookie Nathan Palmer made a nice catch at the sideline of a low Johnson pass during a 7-on-7 red-zone drill. He also made a one-handed catch of a Johnson pass against the coverage of Whitner.

--Quarterback Scott Tolzien got a lot of action for the second day in a row and threw the ball with accuracy while also appearing to show improved arm strength.

--The 49ers' final practice of their mandatory three-day minicamp is Thursday.

Glad to see the offense doing something, supposedly they're reporting that Smith's change in mechanics is showing positive results.

Lets hope everyone pulls it together this year and the offense steps it up big time, no more third down disappointments

Vic Fangio sees no reason the 49ers’ defense won’t get better | ProFootballTalk

Vic Fangio sees no reason the 49ers’ defense won’t get better

After last year’s tenacious D led the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game, what can they do for an encore?

Get better.

With all 11 starters returning, 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio believes his unit will be better in 2012 than it was in 2011, noting that he and the coaching staff now have a full offseason to work with the players, and that last year they only had a little more than a month to get accustomed to each other after the lockout.

“Last year they grew into playing well with each other, and communicated with each other in an advanced way as the season progressed,” Fangio told the San Jose Mercury News. “We would expect that to continue and take it to an even higher level.”

The 49ers ranked first in the league in rushing defense last season, tied for the league lead in takeaways and were second in the league in points allowed, but Fangio said that when he looks at the roster, he doesn’t see a bunch of players who were at their peak last season. Instead, he sees 11 starters who are capable of improving with another year of seasoning.

“I don’t think we have anybody on our defense that should be descending at this point of their career, who are old enough that they shouldn’t play as well as they did last year or even better,” Fangio said.

There is always the concern with a team that has the same core group of players coming back that complacency will set in. But the 49ers’ coaching staff doesn’t seem likely to let that happen. Fangio has every reason to be optimistic.
