I just finished The Shield after watching it on and off for about 2 and a half years. Actually, I skipped maybe 10 episodes in the last season and only watched the last half hour of the last episode.

The show had too much filler, terrible sub-plots (I believe this is one of the main reasons some shows are bad, etc), repetition, crap characters (Aceveda, etc)

The first 2 seasons were crazy, Forrest Whitaker in season 5 was good.

Shows like this, Prison Break, Weeds and a few more that cant come to mind right now should make us appreciate shows such as The Wire and Breaking Bad. I remember giving people the season dvds and they would watch it all day, episode back to back as I did, these shows didn't have that power.

We still have Breaking Bad for a while longer, Boardwalk Empire should also be appreciated. This is why I watch very few shows, quality is what I appreciate.

Anyone else agree?

yes

although I think weeds and the shield shouldnt be grouped in with prison break

weeds season 1-3 habe some of the best suburban satire ever, and the shield is a great show in general

prison break is really entertaining, but really is fast food with bad acting and writing that went nowhere (partly because fox wanted more money, but nevertheless)

breaking bad has some of the best acting Ive seen on tv in a while, and the wire has the GOAT urban social commentary.

I agree 100% what you said with Weeds and the season with New York, but it didnt have consistency. I loved that show, Nancy was my TV Milf lol. The Shield was great the first 2, same with Prison Break but neither of these shows maintained consistency.

Nothing like Breaking Bad, The Wire or even Boardwalk Empire.

People appreciate Breaking Bad because it's easily accessible. Middle class white guy going crazy to make ends meet because he had cancer on basic cable TV.

Trying to understand that the Barksdales were divided and that the police were crippled to do anything because of on-going politics behind the scenes and current election years on HBO. That shyt takes time and dedication. And to be honest it was too real. White people don't want to see themselves being inept at fixing society.

Prison break was great for one season, but tbh, after the break, where could they go with that?

I heard 24 is great as well, but I ain't watched it, I got it, but never got round to it.

the wire isnt as a accessible as BB, true

but BB isnt that accessible either. you dont know the number of people who Ive heard WHINE( including on this forum) at how slow the pace is and if "anything was going to happen", blah blah. average people have a really short attention span for shows like that.

The thing that makes breaking bad so good is the show doesn't allow characters to operate without consequences, there's little filler and the story feels very realistic. It's the same thing that made the wire great. Both shows are grounded in a sense of reality while being fictitious and escapism.

Loved 24 but there were times when I rolled my eyes because they kept going back tot he well to drag a plot out, force a love story, fake a reason for another season. Breaking Bad, Boardwalk, Game of Thrones, Wire all respect our time as viewers and limited the bull crap. They treat us as intelligent viewers and challenge us with sharp writing, acting and story telling.

Dexter started off great then showtime got hella greedy and now we have this muddled mess that i only watch just to see him finally get caught. Walking Dead is teetering on the edge of this in season 3. we'll see what happens to mad men this season, though i have faith in the show runner.

The OP in this thread is on point, we have to appreciate these shows, they won't come along often.

YES ! people dont understand how this is SO important in a show that even attempts to be serious.

thats why even tho weeds past season 3 is much much weaker, I still respect the writing because for every action there usually isnt a get free out of jail card. the dumb choices nancy makes, she has to live with them for the rest of the show.
