As a general rule, I try not to let my expectations get too high before a season begins. But in the case of the offense, I can’t help it. The receiving unit is a Top 5 group, Top 10 at the worst.
We saw what Torrey Smith brought in 2017 and he didn’t even catch a lot of passes. Just the element of his speed alone forced defenses to have to account for him, and opened things up for Alshon Jeffery, Zach Ertz, and Nelson Agholor in the short/intermediate parts of the field. Now you bring in DeSean Jackson, who’s better than Torrey Smith, and already seems to be building a connection with Wentz?
And can you imagine our red zone offense? Alshon Jeffery, Zach Ertz, Dallas Goedert, and JJ Arcega-Whiteside. All four of them are monsters in the RZ. Just put them on the field together and find the mismatch. There’s going to be one, and even if there isn’t, the Eagles have a running back in Jordan Howard who specializes in that particular area of the field.
And the Running Backs, man. No more relying on Wendell Smallwood and Josh Adams.
Even if he never develops into a true three-down back, I can’t envision a world where Miles Sanders isn’t a tremendous upgrade over those two. And, again, Jordan Howard has already proven himself to be a very effective runner and pass blocker.
I still have questions about Vaitai at RG, but Brooks will be back soon anyway. And for the first time in years, I’m not afraid of what will happen if Jason Peters goes down because I have a lot of faith in Andre Dillard as a backup. Jason Kelce and Lane Johnson are studs, and Seumalo should be at least serviceable. So long as the O-Line remains healthy, Carson should be able to use his weapons effectively.
It all just comes down to him. Carson has the weapons, the offensive line, and one of the best head coaches in the NFL in Doug Pederson. Again, as long as everyone stays healthy, there should be no more fukk-ups this year.
Veteran starters almost never play in the first preseason game, and don’t play much of preseason at all. We already know what they can do, and it's more about evaluating your young talent. So, yeah, I wouldn’t expect to see Carson on the field tonight. Or Alshon, DJax, JP, Lane, etc. We will probably be seeing a lot of Miles Sanders, Andre Dillard, JJ Arcega-Whiteside, Vaitai, Josh Sweat, Jordan Mailata, and Nate Sudfeld, though. And those are the guys I’m really interested in seeing.
