Are the Padres gonna be Soto's longterm destination?
I would think it's a long-term play for the Pads. They only have $87 million in committed salary in 2024 so they should have plenty of money available for Soto. Their salaries are structured interestingly too.

Machado's deal is done in 2028; Tatis Jr. doesn't make more than $25 million until 2029 (between $7-25 million from now til 2028).

There is not a more perfect city for baseball than San Diego. If they keep a contender on the field, that stadium will always be close to capacity. I'd be shocked if they don't re-up Soto unless they completely fall apart.

Contreras was the top catcher on the market. The price was real high and teams looked elsewhere.

They still can get a pick for him. They could have got at least 3 minor leaguers for him than one compensation pick
I doubt they got offered what they wanted for Contreras. Keeping him or a qo was worth it , are 3 minor leaguers better than willson Contreras?

Happ still has a year of control left , they didn’t have to trade him & imo Soto to the padres f’d it all up for the cubs

If the prospects offered were ass though the comp pick could be better for them.

They will sell him on staying and having a "core 3" with Tatis and Machado. If they have the funds and give it to him the protection in the lineup will be crazy for him.

Contreras on record saying he didn’t want to leave ,they may keep him especially since the cubs have no catchers ready to replace him

It’s a business but I personally didn’t want Contreras traded , happ streaky af & outfielders is where the cubs have prospects on the horizon so maybe this offseason with him but Willy was my favorite cub besides Baez didn’t wanna see him go without a worthwhile haul
