Mariners are giving up 3 of their top 5 prospects (which includes their top prospect) for a year and a half of Luis Castillo.

I get why the Mariners did it, but this is why some clubs stay bad.

They have multiple all star caliber players getting paid peanuts on rookie contracts. At some point when you're #2 in the division with only one hurdle to get over you have to commit to now. And not WIN THIS YEAR now, but, "we have built a core" now status and add to it. That's where the Ms are now. There might not even be room for their prospects

Mariners do have a nice squad, but as currently constructed do they beat Houston or New York is a 5 game series?

I get making the move as the Mariners haven’t made the postseason in 20 years. So they are doing right by their fans in that sense. For me giving up the caliber of prospect for Luis Castillo is poor asset management

If I were the Mariners, I would have swung a trade for Madison Bumgarner. Probably wouldn’t have even have to give up a top prospect.
