Charlie Strong isn't the guy. I don't care if UT wins this game as far as that goes (obviously I prefer they win), this guy isn't going to win a national championship. It's like having a girl you really like but don't intend to marry. It becomes very difficult to make the right call.
Nobody understands better than I the context of his tenure, but he can't routinely be the lesser game-week and in-game coach. Today's 1st half is a microcosm of his entire tenure: flashes of talent, flashes of ineptitude, flashes of unpreparedness, culminating in tons of frustration.
Some want to be the arbiter of what is and okay to dock Strong for, but I don't much care. Are you guys watching the same guy? That was an embarrassing half of coaching. Call it like it is.
The bad:
- 3 XP misses. Has a national championship HC ever had that happen?
- Strong declined a holding penalty that would have made it 2nd and 20. Ok. St. converted 3rd and 10. I won't pretend to know the analytics there, but I'm sure Strong doesn't either. That went against convention and the 3rd down conversion went against his defense.
- Tackling sucks. Versus Cal confusion killed this team. I've seen the most athletically challenged teams play much better. His reputation does not precede him.
- Another 15 yard sideline penalty. That's the second one this year. I don't see it anywhere else.
- Texas took a delay of game penalty on the FG attempt. LOL. Many harken the ND XP return but the bigger issue is why Texas was running out of time for a simple extra point. Here's how it works. Your team scores, your team kicks. You shouldn't be rushing this s***. Here, instead of using a TO, Texas was assessed a penalty. Unforgivable.
- UT then uses a TO as Ok. St. has the ball towards the end of half. JUST TAKE IT TO THE HALF.
- Leverage sucked all over the field. Elliott sucked twice on the final scoring drive for Ok. St.
The good:
- Rhythm of offense. The O is vastly more prepared than the defense. I get that defense is harder to coach these days, but the difference is stark. Does the offense get double the time to prepare?
- The run game and usage of Swoopes was good, other than towards the end of the 1st half. Use Swoopes on the other side of the field. Clock management sucked on that drive, btw, so add an addendum to 'the bad'.
- The pass rush was getting home quite a bit, and Rudolph has been flushed a lot. I liked seeing Omenihu wide even in the 3-man look. He and Roach are getting home.
What do you think?
