Yeah, there's been a decrease in physical violence but there are still significant threats to humanity that we should seriously be concerned about (catastrophic climate change for one).

And the fact that the oil industry, and big business in general, is trying to accelerate the catastrophe and downplay its significance is pretty troubling

That's not a good thing in itself and literally means nothing.

Well that should be obvious to anyone with an ounce of common sense.

Granted America helped wipe out 10 million Iraqi's a few years ago.

There are other ways for people in power to get what they want without having to wage large scale warfare.

The world is less violent, *shocking*, and?
You could literally say that about anything, first of all. And it is contrast to the false perception of many that somehow things are getting worse in terms of violence and there was once a time when society was less violent and more noble.

I've noticed you enter threads just to be a contrarian debbie downer and say absolutely nothing. Not really interested.

Progress isn't linear so saying "the world is less violent", literally means nothing for our outlook 100 years from now.

I feel like the world is less violent and overall more civilized but the potential for damaging catastrophe (man-made [nuclear, war, financial, etc..]) and increase in systems of control and surveillance grow by the day. I feel conflicted about it in a lot of cases.

Obviously this is all a myth. World is very much in trouble and in worst shape than ever and will continue to go down that road. Got to love conferences from TED...they are out of touch with the world. They love creating unrealistic viewpoints and population control agendas.
